Those with a cat and dog, where do they sleep at night?

Currently dcat sleeps in the kitchen/dining room with the door shut. She always has done and seems to sleep well. We bring our puppy home in 3 weeks and have a crate in the livingroom. I’m worried about sleeping arrangements In the future. Do I keep them separate? How does it work with me taking pup out at night? As I have to go through to the kitchen to get outside. I was thinking of taking her to the front garden 🙈🙈 but not sure.

Help lol

It depends on temperament. I had two cats first and then got a puppy. At first the cats were not keen. A year later they happily slept next to eachother in separate beds or sometimes sharing a bed! I think you just need to help them at first to get along. Introduce them gently etc. But also, depends wha kind of dog and temperament. We had a small sweet dog.

Our current dog would probably be fine if we got a kitten. But dh is allergic, so no can do. Good luck!

Dog sleeps happily in a pen in the kitchen. She's almost 7 months. The cats used to sleep in the living room, but have migrated upstairs now probably to put in more distance between them and the dog. One sleeps on her own cushion in the spare room. The other sleeps on our bed which she never used to. Probably to make up for getting less attention from us in the daytime now. Good luck sorting it out. Your cats will decide what works for them. Worth getting one of those plug in cat pheromone diffuser things to start with to take the edge off the change for them.

The kitten sleeps in the lounge as he can still be a bit wild. When he gets a bit older, I will let him have free reign but he won't be sleeping in my bedroom.

A lot will depend on how your cat feels about the dog, when you bring them home. Do you have a plan to keep separate areas for the cat? Ours lived upstairs once we introduced the dog and it took time for them to go back to using the downstairs space once they’d acclimatised and realised dog was no threat.

So if you haven’t created safe spaces for the cat yet with baby gates etc look into that ASAP.

@Athrawes

I have just acquired a cat, having been a dog owner until recently. Dogs slept on their beds. They were never allowed in the bedroom. Did what they were told. I thought the same would be true of a cat. Dear reader, I was wrong. Cat gets under the duvet and snuggles against my belly! I am outraged. I can't move for fear of waking her.

I tried letting Demelza have free run last week but she just kept waking me up meowing

How old is she? They do settle down more as they get older. They are also semi-trainable but you have to strictly ignore night-time shenanigans in my experience. Any hint of seeming awake and they’ll take advantage!

At family home Dogs in a pen in utility . Cat sometimes joins them , sometimes doesn't - can leave at her own volition 😂

Our cat is a housecat (through her own choising) and a rescue cat. She has full run of the house and sleeps on our room on a chair, our bed, ds's bed, under his bed. She has 2 chairs of her own upstairs! Sleeps anywhere she likes really anytime!
