Those with a cat and dog, where do they sleep at night?

Currently dcat sleeps in the kitchen/dining room with the door shut. She always has done and seems to sleep well. We bring our puppy home in 3 weeks and have a crate in the livingroom. I’m worried about sleeping arrangements In the future. Do I keep them separate? How does it work with me taking pup out at night? As I have to go through to the kitchen to get outside. I was thinking of taking her to the front garden 🙈🙈 but not sure.

Help lol

We had a crate for the DDog but the cats taunted him in it. They'd climb on top, bang the latch, poke at him, try and fish out food, sleep on/in it etc
We gave up and all 4 cats and the dog sleep on my bed. They pile on together and form a large furry lump.
Crate hasn't been used since.

@Miniroofbox

Last cat had the roam of the house and I wasn’t starting that again with this kitten. I can’t be doing with the 5am wake ups middle of the night ceilidhs from a cat.
Yes I often wake up at 5am with all 3 cats staring at me. waiting for their breakfast.

Last night I woke to 2 cats fighting over a mouse head on my bed. That was pleasant.

In hindsight, locking the cats in at night, was a good plan.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/08/2021 21:55

Our cats are out in the utility overnight so they can go out the cat flap to roam.

Dog currently sleeps at the front door or under the dining table or on the sofa in the lounge, whichever she feels like.

Cats and dog are not friends, no matter how much the canine wishes they were. Cats would never.

LetsDoTheTango · 27/08/2021 21:59

Another 'they have full run of the house' cat mum here Grin

The younger one has commandeered the spare bed, and the older one usually sleeps curled up next to my head, or spooning my hubby. Sometimes he plumps for the sofa in the living room if he wants some alone time.

Love them both to bits, despite being regularly woken at 5am for breakfast, or the sound of feline vomiting. An excellent alarm clock, I find!

DeeDimer · 27/08/2021 22:02

3 dogs, 2 cats.
1 dog on DH's head.
1 under the duvet curled up to me.
1 on the floor on a blanket.
1 cat on the bed, the other where he fancies.
We are truly owned by our pets!

mamatoTails · 27/08/2021 22:05

Cat sleeps on the bottom of our bed for a few hours, then heads to the lounge rug.
Dog has a bed in our room, and a bed in the lounge so chops and changes depending on if we have the air conditioning on (abroad) in the bedroom. He likes to be cool, sometimes he just sleeps on the floor by our door as likes the cold tiles.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/08/2021 22:08

I shut the cat in the living room, our living room is attached to the back door so she can come and go through the cat flap.

The dog sleeps in my bedroom!!

MeredithGreyishblue · 27/08/2021 22:09

When we had both, cat on top of the wardrobe and the dog under the duvet. But they never really bothered with each other.

notelegant · 27/08/2021 22:10

Cats wherever they like except lounge which is closed off at night - normally a bedroom.

Dog in utility room behind child gate. Dog never has been allowed upstairs and has always had the utility as her bedroom.

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/08/2021 22:19

The cat sleeps on the bed snuggl

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/08/2021 22:22

Try again.
The cat sleeps on the bed snuggled up next to me and gets up in the night with her stiletto paws tramples on DH then snuggles back down with me.
The dogs in theory sleep together in the kitchen, but the standard poodle lets himself into the utility every night and shuts the door behind himself to sleep in there on the door Matt. Leaving the grumpy old cockerpoo behind spread out on two dog beds.

lollipoprainbow · 27/08/2021 22:23

My cat sleeps on my IKEA unit in the lounge we don't hear a peep out of him all night !!

MaidEdithofAragon · 27/08/2021 22:28

Cat on the bed but can wander anywhere. Dog in crate on landing (so cat can't annoy him, dog is big baby and cries pitifully if the cat can get to him).

hapagirl · 27/08/2021 22:30

Ddog is crate in our bedroom and Dcat is next to me on our bed. I know… we’re suckers.

fitflopqueen · 27/08/2021 22:47

Dog sleeps on our bed/adult childs bed or witheringly will get in her own bed sometimes in our room. T**t cat currently goes out at night time to pursue hunting, if he is in he walks round from about 3am onward knocking items, scratching at closed doors, and dog then gets very excited and wants to tell him off. As it gets colder he will start to stay in at night but will demand to go out before 5am and likes to be back in before 6am.

There is a kennel outside, the dog would not dream of even looking in it, the cat quite happily sits there during the day and sleeps in there sometimes at night.

Shamsa03 · 27/08/2021 23:56

They sleep where ever they want too.

Classica · 28/08/2021 00:01

18 year old dog who used to sleep in a basket in the utility room. But for the past couple of years he prefers to be left to sleep where he wants. Maybe the hallway, maybe the sitting room, maybe the kitchen. He drags his cushion about the house during the night as he fancies.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 28/08/2021 00:05

DDog is no longer with us, but he and the two cats (usually) used to sleep on the sofas - sometimes all on the same one, sometimes on different sofas (we have two sofas in the living room rather than a sofa and armchairs). The cats still do, although sometimes one of them will crash out in a random location such as the utility room shelf.

RogersVideo · 28/08/2021 01:37

My cats and dog have free roam of the house at night, but when Ddog was a pup she slept in a crate in our bedroom. My cats were terrified of her when she first came home and did not want to be in the same room as her.

susan198130 · 28/08/2021 10:33

We let the cats have the run of the house and the dog sleeps in his crate in the utility room which is attached to the kitchen. I find feeding times more of a drama. The dog is more interested in the cats' food, the cats are more interested in the dog's food and the layout of our house doesn't work particularly well for keeping them separate at eating times.

ImJustMum · 28/08/2021 10:39

Our 2 Cats have run of the house as were fortunate enough they dont wake us up aside from belting around the house every now and again. They either sleep at end of my side of the bed or on the landing if its warm. Our Dog sleeps next to the bed in hers but shed be on the bed too if she had her way. I dont have room for any more small animals on my side of the bed as they gravitate to me because DH moves too much, plus i think hed squash her

Jinnybean · 28/08/2021 11:38

Ahh now I feel like an awful mum :(

I tried letting Demelza have free run last week but she just kept waking me up meowing lol, she also tries to get into my daughters room by constantly meowing at the door. Although I wonder if she would sleep in there? I have a crate downstairs for pup, but I’m planning on sleeping downstairs for the first week. May change though and when the husband is on nights she may sleep with me 🙈🙈🙈

On my bed, haha. Have woken up with the cat on my face on many occasions!

Athrawes · 28/08/2021 11:54

I have just acquired a cat, having been a dog owner until recently. Dogs slept on their beds. They were never allowed in the bedroom. Did what they were told. I thought the same would be true of a cat.
Dear reader, I was wrong.
Cat gets under the duvet and snuggles against my belly! I am outraged. I can't move for fear of waking her.

yellowglass · 28/08/2021 12:56

Dogs sleep on the sofa in the kitchen or on tiles in the hall if they get hot . Cat sleeps wherever the princess fancies .

There is a stair gate across the stairs so the dogs can't get upstairs at night , cat often sleeps on the first step as if to say "look at me , yellow doesn't think I need be kept downstairs"

They have the run of the house during the day but I can't be done with them jumping on and off the bed all night .

When Dcat first came home she was shut in the bedroom until I was confident that she could move quicker/higher than the ddogs , she is a bit of a bully now so absolutely rules the roost .
