Does your dog like natural treats like sprats, chickens feet etc?

I'm a bit squeamish so never really given these kinds of things to ddog - she tends to have bonios, smart bones, dried chicken / duck fillets, chews with fruit / veg / cheese / peanut butter in etc. I'd always assumed she was missing out and would snatch my hand off if I offered her a trachea or some other truly disgusting thing.

A friend has bought her a box of such delights (piece of lung, anyone?), and I thought she'd be thrilled...there is a variety of stuff which is all really stinky and she's not remotely interested, just sniffs and walks away. I'm kind of pleased that she's obviously as grossed out as I am, but is this weird for a dog?

Yes - they're the only treats he's' ever had, though.

I'd never feed him things like bonios Blush sorry!

DSis' DDog loves sprats and always has a very shiny coat but DSis is a rather squeamish vegetarian so DDog only ever get said sprays if I'm visiting. Poor Dog Smile

SnitchyBitch · 19/08/2021 20:52

One of mine hates fish so won’t eat sprats but all their treats are stuff like chicken feet, trachea, ribs etc.
They LOVE dried lung and it’s fab for putting in their Kong Balls. I normally by it frozen from Natural Instinct.

OohMrDarcy · 19/08/2021 20:53

Mine has a dried sprat most days, he isn't as good with raw ones. He LOVES a pizzle stick and occasional dried chicken foot...they are great for him too

HarrisMcCoo · 19/08/2021 21:27

My dog loves camel skin at the moment. She gets through a piece of it in around 10 minutes.

HarrisMcCoo · 19/08/2021 21:28

She loves sprats, chicken feet, rabbit ears, cows ears, trachea etc.

Floralnomad · 19/08/2021 21:57

Mine is currently having dried salmon skin flatties , they look and smell revolting but he loves them . I feed lots of natural bits but draw the line at anything that still has the fur on .

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 19/08/2021 21:59

Haven't braved asking for a bull's penis yet so mine have raw veg!!

Our dog hides anything like that! Moved the sofa recently to paint the room and there was a selection of fluffy animal parts behind it.. EnvyGrin

Our lab loves them - rabbit skin with fur, goat ears, sprats, pizzles, braided lamb skin. The lot. And he loves his ostrich bone the most and it really calms him down.

StillMedusa · 20/08/2021 01:22

Mine turns her nose up at 'good quality ' treats!
When she was a puppy she loved pizzles, pigs ears, rabbits ears (with hair..ugh) but now she lights up at a gravy bone!
She is 'mixed fed'..some days kibble with some real meat added, some days raw for variety so you'd think a nice tasty raw bone would make her happy...

Nope.. gravy bones are the prize!

Floralnomad · 20/08/2021 01:28

@StillMedusa I think gravy bones are doggy crack , our dog has a couple as his bedtime snack and he won’t go to bed without them .

Chunkymenrock · 20/08/2021 01:57

Many of these things are quite 'new'. They weren't readily available like they are nowadays. Dogs have done perfectly well for generations without so much as a whiff of one, so I would not give it a moments thought if you cannot bear them.

rbe78 · 20/08/2021 09:54

Mine LOVES them. The pet shop we go to has a whole bunch of natural treats at nose height - she always chooses her own, it's usually a pigs ear. She is also a particular fan of furry rabbits ears, which are apparently good natural wormers, as the worms get caught up and evacuated with the fur.

Not going to lie, the tracheas do gross me out a bit - delightful!

Powertothepetal · 20/08/2021 12:24

When I used to raw feed the one thing mine absolutely wouldn’t touch was anything with fur on.
Feathers were fine but anything with fur and her eyes go wide and she would look at you like you’d just offered her a dead puppy 🤣

Darklane · 20/08/2021 13:54

Mine love the dried fish skin cubes.

RogersVideo · 20/08/2021 14:01

Mine is really hit and miss with treats and chews, but on the whole tends likes the natural stuff well enough (certainly loves a chicken foot!)

TheFlis12345 · 20/08/2021 14:09

Our pup goes mad for the gross treats, particularly duck or chicken feet and necks. They’re great for keeping him occupied and quiet if we are both working (though we ensure he stays on sight as he eats them).

picklemewalnuts · 20/08/2021 14:10

No, mine doesn't class them as edibles. He gets dehydrated liver and kidney, loves them, but chickens feet or trachea or anything else remotely exciting are rejected.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/08/2021 14:15

Mine eats them happily when she's at the dog boarder but refuses them at home. She won't even eat bones. I got some lovely raw beef knuckles and I have to flambé them with the garden blow torch before she'll even consider giving them a lick.

magicstar1 · 20/08/2021 14:25

We get pig's ears (she chokes on cow ears), chicken feet and rabbit ears, but her favourite things are actually from B&M Bargains. They're Cod Knots - just 100% dried cod skin, and she'll do anything for one.

picklemewalnuts · 20/08/2021 20:38

Ooh I'll try cod knots!

Quickchangeartiste · 20/08/2021 20:50

Mine love Sprats, hairy rabbit ears, bones etc, but I draw the line at buying puzzle sticks ( the smell) , anything tripe related, or trachea.
On a walk nothing is as alluring as dead squirrel, deer feet or anything rabbit related.
Strangely enough chicken feet are not very interesting to my two, and given that they are labs, I find that very telling…

AdoraBell · 20/08/2021 20:54

My dogs absolutely love any fish/chicken/meat they are given. They don’t care if it’s raw or cooked.

bigbaggyeyes · 20/08/2021 20:59

Yes mine loves things like this, pigs ears, rabbit ears, including fur which is supposed to be a natural wormer
