Dog suddenly very clingy

We've got a 4 year old Cocker Spaniel. He's always been very much a people dog and is your shadow around the house, will sit with you on the sofa etc. but absolutely fine to be left alone.

The last few days he's become insistent on sitting on one of our knees at any available opportunity. Today the toddler had fallen asleep on me and he continuously tried to climb onto my knee. It's just out of character for him to be so clingy and desperate to sit on our knees and he sees stressed (lots of panting). Nothing has changed in the house and no obvious cause of stress.

I'm going to take him to the vet for a check up in case it's pain related (he's a walking bloody vets bill - thank God for pet plan Grin) but wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar.

Bless him!! He might very well be poorly - a few weeks ago Ddog took to following DH around everywhere and trying to be next to him at every available opportunity, whereas normally she potters about the house just doing her own thing. Wouldn't come near me! She was also panting more than normal and huffing through her nose a lot. Took her to the vets and although they couldn't find anything obvious wrong with her she did have a high temp, so they gave her a week of antibiotics to try as they said it was likely to be some kind of infection and she's back to normal now.
