So worried, vets appointment in 2 hours.

Our 8 month old boxer isn't well. She's had diarrhea for a couple of days, we put it down to something she's eaten. Yesterday she was really lethargic, only got up to go for her walks. On her walk she walked beside me the whole way - unheard of. We gave her some pumpkin and yoghurt last night which she ate. This morning she wouldn't get out of bed - went outside for a wee then came in an hid under dining table.

I think she has a temperature.

So worried, what could it be???

Dog D&V bugs are quite common and your vet is likely to know if there's one going round your area.

It's a good sign that your dog is still weeing. There's a good chance you'll be sent away with supportive therapy (electrolyte sachets, instructions on how to syringe in water to make sure she stays hydrated, a probiotic paste, and info on suitable diet - typically chicken and rice and/or scrambled/chopped hardboiled eggs)

But she's completely lethargic?? She has quite a bit of discharge from her eyes? I really hope it's just a d&v thing. She vomited once yesterday, but not a huge amount - and clear and mucosy? Longest course of hours ever.

Vet suspects some sort of gastro infection. She had a temp and was a little dehydrated. Antibiotics and anti inflammatory prescribed. She's already a bit brighter. Have to take her back tomorrow, she's already peeking up a bit.

Fingers crossed!!

Glad she seems to be perking up already

Tempusfudgeit · 05/08/2021 12:45

Is she vaccinated against distemper?

Auntieobem · 05/08/2021 12:51

@Tempusfudgeit yes all vaccination up to date

She's no better 😪Horrible night with her trying to get her cooled down. She yelped a couple of times when she moved. Left our room door open and she's come downstairs for a wee. I've given her this am's tablets, she's had spoonful of yoghurt and some water. Back to vets this am. Poor poor pup.

Poor puppy. What time are you back at the vets?

BiteyShark · 06/08/2021 07:48

Could she have eaten anything that might cause a blockage. I ask because when mine had he actually yelped when he moved which was the first and only time he ever did that and I suspect it was because the thing that was jamming his intestine had moved.

Auntieobem · 06/08/2021 08:05

We're back at 10.45. Possible that she's eaten something- but vet checked and said all felt well in her tummy? I think she has neck pain - doesn't seem to want to open her mouth wide when yawning and yelped when I opened her mouth to give her her tablets ( no interest in taking them with a treat). She's only had one poo since yesterday morning.😪😪☹

Please get her checked for meningitis
If she's not had vomiting then a gastro bug or foreign body is less likely

Auntieobem · 06/08/2021 08:15

@Veterinari will do

Ifs she's got d&v I would avoid dairy, in fact many dogs are lactose intolerant anyway so shouldn't have yogurt. It can take 3-5 days for antibiotics to work.

Auntieobem · 06/08/2021 13:27

Vet says temp a bit lower and that clinically she's doing better today (maybe need to tell the dog that?). Anyway - bloods taken, keep going with meds and if worried over weekend call them. She's sleeping on a cooling mat just now and (TMI) has had a firmer poo.

Hate it when they are sick!

Try giving her chicken and rice while she's still unwell I hope she gets better soon. Such a worry when they are poorly
BiteyShark · 06/08/2021 16:45

Hope she feels better soon. It's awful to see them feeling ill.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 06/08/2021 18:00

I hope she feels better soon

Auntieobem · 06/08/2021 19:55

She's outside playing for the first time in days...maybe turned a corner

You feel so helpless when they are poorly don’t you. She’s an absolute beauty too
