My 2 year old German shepherd is constantly scratching himself and sometimes gets sore patches. We want to try an elimination diet but not sure what to eliminate. We've tried chicken and fish already. We add fish oils to his food and we are thinking about probiotics. Has anyone tried these or has any other suggestions? thank you

Scabies?

Try a vet strength flea treatment which also cures scabies?
like Bravecto.

Why jump immediately to a load of chemicals when that might not even be the issue.

Has he seen a vet about it yet OP? Don’t let them give him anything like steroid injections without trying the natural route first.

An elimination diet is a really good idea, as are supplements. Something like Proflax Skin & Coat could help.

We have an itchy dog. She has allergies so is on a salmon based diet but can tolerate small amounts of chicken and lamb. We know we have a problem when her ears start to go!
Stinky Stuff has been amazing for her, both the supplement and the ear stuff.
Obviously it's worth a vet check but our vet is very good at avoiding unnecessary treatments and we decided to start with a "from the inside out" approach which seems to be working 🤞🏻

Thanks for the replies. Yes we've seen a vet they said likely an allergy. They said to try elimination diet but that's it.
Its not seasonal, it's constant, so not pollen. His skin looks healthy other than when he scratches too much and gets a sore patch. He's had the standard flee stuff they give at the vets.

Do you use carpet fresh? Wash blankets in an irritating powder? Towels?

loobylou44 · 01/08/2021 19:19

Wheat allergy? Our lab was a really itchy dog until we switched her to a grain free diet and she's much better now. She also reacts to chicken and most meats so is on a fish based food.

Jurassicparkinajug · 01/08/2021 19:51

Hes fed raw. We don't use anything on for carpet and we've changed the washing powder.
I might try fish only for a while but it means changing to a different food company as their only fish option is with chicken too. I used to make the raw diet myself and he was itchy then also.
