Kennel cough

Does anyone know if a dog is infectious prior to showing symptoms. My dog was playing with a dog 2 days ago that has today started coughing. I'm hoping it's just when they start coughing that they are infectious but I can't find anything definitive online. Anyone know about this? Thanks

The infection of this canine cough is spread through airborne droplets from other dogs coughing or sneezing in close proximity. Dogs catch Kennel Cough when they inhale bacteria or viruses into their respiratory tract, causing inflammation of the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe)

Dogs can be carriers without showing symptoms - so I would assume that yes, your dog might have been infected.

TBH I wouldn't worry about it - my three have just had it, the dog I look after got it from them, 3 of the 4 were over it in a few days, my oldest dog had it the longest (a week or so) but none of them needed antibiotics.

It's doing the rounds here, many dogs getting it, but not all. two women who always walk their dogs together, one dog had symptoms - the other didn't. No way of knowing if the dog had it or not.

it's generally not a serious illness, manuka honey helps with the cough.

@catsrus yeah I'm not too worried but my pup is only 4 months so was a bit concerned but nothing we can do about it anyway. Thanks all.

Yes they are. Mine caught it a few months ago. 3 days prior to him starting coughing he had been playing with our friends dog. I phoned her to warn her that mine had it and sure enough 2 days after my dog started coughing hers did too. It's very contagious so if your dog has it don't let it near other dogs for a couple of weeks. Reduce risk of getting it by not using shared water bowls (like the ones at pubs etc).
I've now had mine vaccinated. It's not an expensive vaccine.. £22 at my local vet and gives a bit of peace of mind.
