Kennel Cough

There is an outbreak of kennel cough near us...the vet said it is rife at the moment! Both our dogs have it and we have had over a week of hacking, retching dogs who have sounded like they are choking. It's horrible poor things.

They are fine in themselves...eating, drinking, being lovely and extremely demanding Grin for love and cuddles and play. We obviously haven't taken them out for a week and a half now so they don't pass it on. The only place they can have picked it up is out on their walks, there are a lot of dogs at our local park.

They haven't really wanted to go out, it's about the only thing that has been different. And they do have each other. However I was wondering when we can take them, the last couple of days they have picked up and are starting to get a bit restless.

The vet said when they stop coughing which they haven't done yet, though it has been hardly at all today thank goodness. Reading up they suggest 14 days since symptom onset which will be Monday for one dog and next Thursday for the second one.

Has anyone had a dog with this and, if so, what has been the advise given to you? I obviously really really don't want to pass this on to any other dogs.

Thank you!

We kept away from other dogs 14 days but went back to outskirts of park at about day 10 with dog firmly on lead. We called to other owners to stay back.

I was lucky - two of mine were over it in 2-3 days and the third was a week. My friend's dog caught it from mine & was about 3-4 days. It's doing the rounds here too, it's the talk of the dog walk.

My vet said to continue taking them out, on lead. Luckily I have a reasonably sized garden for them to run around in so it wasn't a big deal. He said fine to be off lead once they weren't coughing. Manuka honey seemed to help the cough.....

It's not usually a serious illness unless you have an unvaccinated puppy or immune-suppressed dog.

We have an outbreak here too. Mine had it and also only had symptoms for about 5 days - he sounded terrible but bounced back v quickly. Vaccinated too which vet said may have helped with symptoms. I kept him in while he was coughing and on lead and away from other dogs until he had been cough free for a few days - my vet also said he was fine to be with other dogs as soon as he had stopped coughing. I think he was infectious before he started coughing and fairly sure he gave it to another dog we know but unfortunately by the time I realised he had it the damage had been done.

Just to add he's been around a lot of dogs since he stopped coughing and he doesn't seem to have passed it on to any of them. Just hoping he doesn't get it again because the poor little guy sounded terrible! I also took his collar off all the time and only walked him on harness and that seemed to help- vet said the collar could put pressure on his throat and hurt him when it was already swollen.

Reading with interest as one of my dogs has kennel cough, the ther one seems ok at the moment but they are 'isolating' but getting resless being stuck in! Vet also said it was rife at the moment where we are too (we are in Leeds)

Poor OP's dogs. I have no advice. Can I please ask if your dogs were vaccinated?

I know most Poole only vaccinate if they're actually going into kennels. But I've also heard of vaccinated dogs catching kennel cough.

familychallenge · 15/07/2021 23:51

@magsbagsfags mine is vaccinated and caught it. He bounced back in a very few days with no treatment and never really got any symptoms other than a cough. My friend's dog am pretty sure caught it from him, is not vaccinated and has been much sicker and has taken longer to recover. Both young and healthy dogs. So am inclined to think the vaccine helped but didn't avoid all variants. Bit like Covid!

None of mine were vaccinated against kc this year - but none had it seriously. It does seem to have been a relatively mild variant doing the rounds atm. 🤞

@familychallenge that makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

Milo13 · 17/04/2023 15:02

Hi all, my wee boy of 13 has had KC for 5 days now and has bad episode of coughing about 2/3 times per day, when is this likely to stop? On top of this he has also partially torn his crutiate ligaments 😩 he is miserable 😩

Spanielsarepainless · 19/04/2023 19:59

We vaccinate ours as it's included as part of the care plan and have not had a case for 20+ years. Vaccine was short in the late winter but getting it done at the end of this week.

DeflatedAgain · 19/04/2023 20:09

Keep away for about 2 weeks. That's what we did poor thing (he sounded like a honking goose) I was petrified! Eventually took him out just at night time when no one around and didn't allow him to sniff at doggy hotspots as it can still be passed from surfaces.

Play lots of games in the house - hide and seek, chase etc to keep them sane.

Hope they get better soon 🐾
