Lead training insight?

Currently waiting for our new pup to be clear to go out after their second vacs.
She is a goldendoodle and we expect her to be a big dog - her mum is 40kg.

We will be signing her up to some classes in the near future but in the meantime would like to make a start even just around the garden.
We have a short lead and a harness, we want to teach her to walk alongside us and not pull on the lead.
We tried the harness out and shes happy to wear it.

Would anyone mind giving us some pointers as to how to make a start?

Are you asking how to get her to walk beside you rather than how to wear harness and lead?

If you want to start teaching walking in the correct place I would do it without harness and lead to start with in your garden. Reward your puppy for being in the position you want them to be. SO if they are standing to your side then reward them.

Start with by rewarding them when you are not moving, then add in a step and reward etc etc. Go slowly do not rush this.

BE really careful when you do add the lead that you never ever reward for a tight lead. So always reward your dog when the lead is loose.

Very quick tour of how to start loose lead walking!

Thanks.

Yes I basically want her to not pull on the lead. She will weigh over half of my body weight so I can't rely on having to hold her back or wrestle with her on our walks Blush

She doesn't mind the harness and is more than happy to wear it. The lead is another topic but we can only try in the garden until she's all clear after her second lot of vacs.
