Puppy's first day - hasn't had a nap yet!

Presumably it's all too exciting.

I tried putting him in his crate but he just cried and I felt bad.

He tried to fall asleep on my foot but wouldn't go in his crate.

He's happy chewing in the crate with the door open but cries if I shut the door.

Will he settle down?

He also hasn't had a poo yet.

One wee outside, 2 indoors.

He needs to be crate trained - you can't just put him in and close the door. You need to make it a positive place to be :) it could take weeks to get him used to being in there with the door closed, and many dogs don't like crates at all.

Have a read up on crate training and in the meantime, if he wants to sleep on your foot, let him Grin mine did all his naps on me at that age - now he's happy to curl up next to me or take himself up to bed!

We never used a crate.

He has been crate trained at the breeder and we have have same set up and bedding etc. But obviously he had his siblings with him.

Breeder told us to close the door but I don't like to b

So gorgeous! Spaniel? Have you tried a hot water bottle in there with an old T-shirt?

warmfluffytowels · 12/07/2021 16:43

Is he a show cocker? He's gorgeous!

Yes, mine was also crate-trained at the breeder but slept in with his siblings - he hated sleeping in a crate by himself. You also have to consider it's a new home with new smells, new people, no siblings or mum around etc.

Our breeder gave us a blanket that smelt of mum and siblings - did you get anything similar?

puginamug · 12/07/2021 16:50

Yes, we have one of those.

He seems to be happy to potter in and it if his crate for now so I'll go with that.

He's just met the cat!

My puppy did a lot better when the crate was covered. If he could see out he felt like he was missing out. Once it was covered he settled very quickly. My pup was already used to the crate too and happy to go in and out. Even at coming up 17 months he loves his crate and I often find him sleeping in there during the day even though he sleeps loose in our bedroom at night.

PollyRoulson · 12/07/2021 17:42

Let him sleep anywhere on the first day. He is over stimulated and needs to chill.

Sit down with him and give him a cuddle and encourage a bit of calm and see what happens.

He's fallen asleep on the rug

He's gorgeous! What did he and the cat think of one another?

Your boy is beautiful 😍

I'm following this thread with interest as our puppy is arriving in a few weeks.

I'm reading Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy which extols many of the tips on here.

Asleep in the crate!

He was oblivious to the cat but the cat is most unimpressed.

The other cat is refusing to come downstairs.
