I feel like we will never have a dog 🙁

Title is a bit dramatic as weve only messaged a few breed clubs and therefore have only been passed details of a few breeders but I they havent replied 🙁

I told them abit out the household, ages, work patterns, reason for choosing the breed etc and asked if they'd be interested in talking to us about their dogs (how many litters, health checks etc) but no reply.

Have we done something wrong?

If you're after a sought-after breed, which it sounds like you are, you have to put the work in!

I was emailing and calling breeders for four months before we got lucky.

Keep going!

FawkesThePhoenix · 09/07/2021 16:36

Thank you.

It is a sought-after breed (SBT) but not as popular as cocker spaniels and labradors in my area.

I'll keep going...

Have you been on the kennel club website?

Soubriquet · 09/07/2021 16:40

If you want a SBT, why not go for a rescue

You can’t throw a stick in a rescue centre without hitting a staffie

FawkesThePhoenix · 09/07/2021 16:45

Yes, but the pups listed were all blue which we dont want and the breeders that I did look into are charging about 2-3 grand for their pups. Admittedly I didnt look through the whole list as it was massive so seems I still have plenty of searching to do!

I've been advised by the breed club to never pay more than 1500 for a pup.

Weve looked a rescues, and are still regularly looking but most of them say older children or teenagers (we have a 4 year old).

Ive got onto 2 waiting lists of reputable breeders of SBTs after ages of looking and almost being scammed - join staffordshire bull terrier pups. When only the best will do on facebook. They have a very strict criteria of who can advertise litters due/planned matings. Must be kc reg, health tested, eye checks etc. Good luck 👍

Just to add- of the 2 lists im on- none are breeding blues and 1 is charging £1500 and the other £1100. Fully health tested parents, eye checked pups, kc reg.

@Iwanthatone

I will keep on. It's my inner child wanting everything right now rather than patiently waiting!

Can I ask how you were almost scammed? That's what I worry about. Theres so many litters advertised and they look so dodgy!

I was asked to pay a deposit before the pups were born (i didnt obvs) then found out there was no pups in the first place 🤬 i expect plenty were taken in though x the breeders im with dont take any money until pup pick up day x

Iwanthatone · 09/07/2021 18:27

@FawkesThePhoenix i can pm the name of 1 of the breeders if youd like? The mating is planned for this month- there may be space left on his waiting list

FawkesThePhoenix · 09/07/2021 18:35

We used the champdogs site and paid the £10 annual membership fee to find our pup recently, able to set up alerts for litters and all reputable breeders with KC reg, pedigree progeny, full health tests etc available to view on there. Price wise the current going rate for a Lab puppy in the part of SE England where we live is around £2500, prices shot up during lockdown but obviously depends on breed, where you live and breeders with working and field dogs are more expensive. Good luck you'll get there!
