Euros Final and the puppy

puginamug · 08/07/2021 08:16

Our puppy arrives on Saturday. Grin he is 10 weeks.

However I'm now panicking about the final.

We want to watch it with family (4 other people coming, maybe 6).

His crate is in our sitting room and is currently right next to the TV until the man comes to move the TV on Monday.

It feels too soon to leave him alone for a couple of hours, or to take him to someone else's house and expect him to behave.

Will he be forever traumatised if we have people here? I'm considering trying to rig a screen up in the garden but it's forecast rain.

Am I over thinking this?

Honestly, I would cancel the guests. Terrifying levels of noise and ‘newness’ for a new puppy on their first full day in a new home.

KineticSand · 08/07/2021 08:25

I think at 10 weeks old on just the 2nd day in its new home, the puppy will be scared by 10 people cheering etc. It will be very unsettling for such a young dog who doesn't know anything yet about its new home and will be missing its mother still.

(My dog is 5 and very calm and settled, and even she went and hid from DP's cheering and yelling at the tv last night!)

Could the football watching party happen at someone else's house? People will understand about the new puppy situation. One or 2 people should stay with the pup and watch the match quietly.

Puppy needs need to come before football this time I reckon.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 08/07/2021 08:27

Can you pick him up on Monday instead?

Ostryga · 08/07/2021 08:28

You have to cancel, or pick the puppy up on Monday. There is no way you can have people over and excited on the second day home for a new puppy. Absolutely no way.

And no shrieking at the TV if you do get the pup. The first 16 weeks are incredibly important to have positive experiences. Scaring the puppy is going to lead to fear, and that will lead to a reactive dog.

Chemenger · 08/07/2021 08:30

You need put the puppy first. He can’t be in a room of shouting people on his first day, or all alone. Is a football match more important than an actual living animal that you will have for years? At the very least minimise the number of people. He is a tiny baby away from his mother and siblings for the first time. I suggest that you decide who wants to see the football most and they go elsewhere to watch it while those who want to stay with the puppy do so, quietly and calmly. You need to consider your priorities.

RestingPandaFace · 08/07/2021 08:30

It depends a lot on the environment the pup has been raised in. He might have been in a noisy family environment and been allowed to stay up for the semis.

If he’s come from somewhere quiet it might all be too much for him.

Is there a family member not bothered about the football that could take him in another room?

Ostryga · 08/07/2021 08:31

@RestingPandaFace doesn’t matter at the puppy’s initial home with the mum and littermates. The puppy has comfort and knows the home etc.

A new home, 10 people, shouting? On the second day? Awful idea.

Wormholes · 08/07/2021 08:32

Will he be forever traumatised if we have people here?

A group of large, noisy, strange apes jumping up and down and hooting next to his cage just as he leaves the safety and familiarity of his litter?

Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty safe bet.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2021 08:33

Pick up on Monday.
Puppies need a chance to settle in a new environment - being left alone for a couple of hours won't work (ddog got zoomies between 8-9 at night for one thing) and being around stressed and emotional shouty people isn't a good idea.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 08/07/2021 08:36

Unfortunately, yes. Can you put the crate in another room?

puginamug · 08/07/2021 08:43

I've asked her if I can collect on Monday instead.

She's a bit strange so we'll have to see.

OP posts:
puginamug · 08/07/2021 08:58

Right. I've rung the breeder, collection changed to Monday.

Thank you all.

Nice one OP!

I wish all threads could be resolved as unanimously as this!

Congrats on the lovely new addition on Monday. I presume he/ she will be named Gareth.

puginamug · 08/07/2021 12:15

Thank you.

Even though the breeder claimed to have no knowledge England were even in the final!

6 puppies are supposed to be being collected on Saturday, I can't believe we are the only family asking to postpone!

I can't believe that you're ditching the pup on it's first day to watch the bloody television. I would handback your deposit if I were the breeder, you don't sound to have your priorities right for getting a pup.

elevenses75 · 08/07/2021 12:23

Not everyone will be watching the football though. And I wouldn’t be putting a football match ahead of picking my puppy up tbh. But each to their own, you’ve done a sensible thing and that’s good for the puppy that you’ve thought about it. Little frights early on can be really traumatic for young pups.

Wtf. Shut up 🤣 op is being very sensible and not putting a puppy through a potentially traumatic evening.

Thankfully she’s not as selfish, or idiotic as you.

TopTabby · 08/07/2021 12:47

@stupidstupider
How nasty, OP is trying to do the right thing!
Appropriate user name though.

puginamug · 08/07/2021 15:15

Er, I'm not entirely sure I'm prioritising the TV over a puppy.

More I'm prioritising my teenage son, and what could be a really memorable night for him, over an extra 48 hours of puppy, whose wellbeing is obviously being taken into account because I'm a responsible dog owner. It will be like Bonfire night round!

But thanks for taking the time @stupidstupider

You can’t believe that not everyone lives exactly the same life and has the same interests as you, really?

The other families might be prepared to watch it quietly and not be having a party. Or maybe they’re not going to watch it at all.

I wouldn't be watching the final.

Not everyone will be having a rowdy party.

puginamug · 08/07/2021 16:09

@YelloYelloYello I was being slightly flippant!

Even if the op sits in silence there is a chance fireworks will be going off all night (they have been here for every game) & very noisy neighbours. With all that going on the puppy is surely better off in familiar surroundings on that particular day?

I think the OP did completely the right thing.

But I also think not everyone has the same circumstances and getting the puppy on that day might be the right thing for them.

Tal45 · 08/07/2021 16:38

To be honest I wouldn't buy a pup from a breeder who's a bit strange.
