Sore hips from dog walking

Peacelillyhippy · 04/07/2021 19:24

We've had our rescue terrier for 3 months now. I walk him for 2-3 hours a day.

I find my hips are getting sore. I am mid 40s. Has anyone else had this? Are the achey hips likely to be from walking so much more than before? Any suggestions to help protect or support my hips? Thanks!

clam exercises and stretches.
also look at your shoes, are they fitting well?

It's very likely to be a footwear issue. Don't underestimate the value of really decent quality, well-fitting shoes.

I'm a professional dog walker and need to have memory foam insoles in my shoes to prevent hip and lower back pain. I wear Skechers in summer and have memory foam insoles for wellies and walking boots in the muddy winter months.

If I don't wear my insoles, I end up sore that evening - it's a mistake I've only made twice! Grin

There are some stretches you can do for hip pain as well, but I'd see if footwear fixes your issue first.

I used to get hip pain and it turned out it wasn't my hips at all, but muscular tension in my back and legs. It might be worth a trip to a decent physio or sports therapist.

Have you had your Covid vaccines?

I walk my spaniels for about 2 hours a day and since the f*ing vaccine I can barely get over stiles, come home in agony and need to take Ibuprofen. My hips are horrendous, but it's on the yellow card system as a common side effect for women.

I've got Aigle wellies that I mostly wear so it's def not my footwear.

Just a thought...........

Thanks for the suggestions! It may be my footwear. First two months, i used sketchers or proper walking boots. I had no achey hips then. But recently i have been in sandals, then two days ago flip flops! That's when I felt sore enough to write the OP.

I will do hip stretchs though as I had previous hip problems from running (i thought dog walking would be a gentler alternative!).

And I did have my first jab a week or so ago...interesting!
