My dog was just attacked.

I'm shook up and pretty angry right now. I just took my dog to the local park for a walk. She was on a lead and we passed a young boy aged about six with a Jack Russell, also in a lead.
I wasn't concerned as we passed because my dog is always friendly and the JR seemed fairly settled too.
Then out of nowhere the JR slipped its lead and went nuts. All I remember seeing was teeth and limbs failing and spittle flying through the air. I tried to pull my dog away from the JR (she was absolutely terrified and trying to back away anyway but it had her face in its jaws).
I tried to pick my dog up, but the JR actually lifted off the ground with her, refusing to let go.

I eventually had to get down on my hands and knees and pry the JR's jaws off my dog and kneel on its neck until the woman who owned it extracted herself from her chat with another mum on a park bench to come and retrieve her dog.

To be fair she was pretty apologetic...but why do people take dogs like this to public parks where there are bound to be other animals? And why leave a small child in charge of it?

My hand was bitten. My ankle was bitten. But more importantly my dog has a deep cut in her lip and is shaking with fear. I'm also pregnant, so in the kerfuffle I actually pissed myself a bit. Blush

I think I just wanted to vent as I know it's done now and there's nothing further I can do. I'm just mad!

I’m so sorry OP
As you were bitten you really should report it, even if you don’t have the owners details. I imagine the dog has got form so should not have been in the charge of a child even if an adult was close by
Sounds really shocking and you were pretty brave
I hope you and your dog are ok

Clymene · 04/07/2021 18:53

God how frightening. Did you not ask for her details?

FeatheredHope · 04/07/2021 18:53

That’s absolutely awful.
In priority terms, you need to get you and the dog seen to though. Those wounds need to be seriously cleaned and particularly as you are pregnant, if it broke the skin, you need to talk to a doctor as a matter of urgency as they will probably want to put you on antibiotics as a precaution - dog bites should be taken very seriously.

MaMelon · 04/07/2021 18:55

This seems to be happening more and more - poorotrained dogs are definitely on the increase. Chances are it’s done it before but she thought it was on the lead so it would be ok. Idiot.

Did you get her details at all? I hope you and your dog are ok, it sounds very scary.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 04/07/2021 19:00

Please report to the police. Even online.. She is def guilty of not being in control of her ddog allowing a small dc to be in charge.
Start a case op. Likely won't be a one off.

Puppywithattitude · 04/07/2021 19:05

Oh OP that's awful.
My dog was bitten 5 times as a puppy by off lead dogs, I feel your pain.
On one occasion my husband was hit by an owner whilst he was trying to wrestle her collie off our boy.
I can't believe the amount of poorly trained digs/owners around.
Had dogs all my life, will never get another after this one.

cheeseisnice · 04/07/2021 19:07

I know her name, purely because this is a small town and I've seen her pop up on local Facebook forums. I don't know where she lives or anything else about her.

She mooched over, said 'I'm so sorry', hit her dog and bollocked her little boy. I was completely on the back foot, not to mention sat on the wet grass cradling my dog with piss soaked jeans, so I just said 'check your dog, I don't know if I injured it'. And then said to the little boy 'don't worry mate, it's not your fault'. I then got up and left the park. I wish I'd been more forthright with her in hindsight, but I was shaking and worried sick about my dog.

Hoppinggreen · 04/07/2021 19:11

Shouting at her wouldn’t have helped but you need checking and your dog might too. Even if your dogs obvious injuries aren’t too bad they could have internal ones and if you have broken skin you might need medical attention.

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 04/07/2021 19:15

If you know her name then, if I were you, I would be reporting. Does your dog need any vet attention? I’d be claiming the cost back off her if it does. I’m not surprised you are shaken up, horrible thing to happen to you and your poor dog Flowers

Saltyslug · 04/07/2021 19:15

Go get yourself and your dog seen. Then get the dog reported

Zebrahooves · 04/07/2021 19:17

Another one saying get your wounds checked at hospital and report the dog.

DogsSausages · 04/07/2021 19:23

How frightening and you are pg too, you need to get your bites seen by a doctor, take photos and report this to the police and the council dog warden. Your dog should get the once over from a vet and the j.r shouldnt be supervised by a young child and should probably wear a muzzle and a non slip lead.

cheeseisnice · 04/07/2021 19:30

Thank you. I'm going to sort my dog out and then later this evening I'll report it. Which number do I call? Local dog warden, triple 111, police?

This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Report to the police. You can do it online but take photos of you and doggo asap for a record. Really hope you're both ok, I observed something similar this week when out for a walk and it was awful. Owner didn't even come over just stood on the sidelines calling dog back. The woman was clearly a dog walker with 5 dogs so couldn't get clear to really separate. Awful.

cheeseisnice · 04/07/2021 19:35

I'm sorry to everyone who's also experienced this kind of thing. This is the first time we've ever been attacked, bar a couple of minor incidents with snappy dogs. It really is the downside to dog ownership. Sad

DogsSausages · 04/07/2021 19:36

The dog warden is via the council, you can do it online I think, the police number is 101 who you should report it to. Are you taking the dog to the vet, they can take photos of any injuries. You need to see a doctor for yourself, either go to your local hospital or at least ring 111 for an out of hours doctor especially as you are pregnant. Animal bites can lead to nasty infections, have you washed your hand and ankle in plenty of water.

TossieFleacake · 04/07/2021 19:36

A horrible thing to happen, no wonder you are shaken up OP.
Definitely report it, owners of aggressive dogs need to be held to account.

Hopefully it won't happen again ... but if it does I have read that lifting the attacking dogs back legs up off the floor usually disorientates them enough to make them let go.

GameofPhones · 04/07/2021 19:37

Round my way the owners of biting dogs are presented with vets' bills, and they usually pay up.

Floralnomad · 04/07/2021 19:37

Make sure you get your own bites looked at @cheeseisnice , there was a thread on here a few weeks ago where someone ended up in hospital with a dog bite . I’d report it to the dog warden , and hopefully she now knows not to leave her child in charge of it .

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/07/2021 19:39

It's horrible OP, my sympathies. When mine was attacked I started a thread saying exactly the same things - wish I'd done more, wish I'd had a proper go at the owner etc. But in hindsight, that wouldn't have helped my dog in the heat of the moment. You were looking after her Flowers Hope you're both OK.

I’m an experienced dog owner. JRTs are vicious bastards. A friend has his testicles bitten by one who arrived at his house with a guest - this is just one instant of many JRT stories I know.

To leave one with a child is ridiculous. I would never ever have one. Small doesn’t mean cute.

RandomMess · 04/07/2021 19:42

Your bites get reported to the police.
