My dog was just attacked.

I'm shook up and pretty angry right now. I just took my dog to the local park for a walk. She was on a lead and we passed a young boy aged about six with a Jack Russell, also in a lead.
I wasn't concerned as we passed because my dog is always friendly and the JR seemed fairly settled too.
Then out of nowhere the JR slipped its lead and went nuts. All I remember seeing was teeth and limbs failing and spittle flying through the air. I tried to pull my dog away from the JR (she was absolutely terrified and trying to back away anyway but it had her face in its jaws).
I tried to pick my dog up, but the JR actually lifted off the ground with her, refusing to let go.

I eventually had to get down on my hands and knees and pry the JR's jaws off my dog and kneel on its neck until the woman who owned it extracted herself from her chat with another mum on a park bench to come and retrieve her dog.

To be fair she was pretty apologetic...but why do people take dogs like this to public parks where there are bound to be other animals? And why leave a small child in charge of it?

My hand was bitten. My ankle was bitten. But more importantly my dog has a deep cut in her lip and is shaking with fear. I'm also pregnant, so in the kerfuffle I actually pissed myself a bit. Blush

I think I just wanted to vent as I know it's done now and there's nothing further I can do. I'm just mad!

Good morning OP. Yes, it is possible to be infected this quickly. If your tetanus vaccinations are not up to date, you should have a new one within six hours of a dog breaking your skin. You have gone past that so you really need medical attention ASAP. Tetanus in pregnancy is very bad news.

Such a horrible thing to happen.

moomin11 · 05/07/2021 07:42

So sorry this happened to you OP it's awful. Our dog was attacked at 13 weeks old under similar circumstances, the dog broke his elbow. Report to non emergency police. My husband was also bitten and needed a tetanus jab. Hope you're ok x

moomin11 · 05/07/2021 07:44

The owner of the other dog reluctantly paid all our vet bills too.

cheeseisnice · 05/07/2021 07:54

Morning all. I got a couple of hours sleep and woke up to find I'd ripped the dressing off as I slept. It's itching quite a lot now and is really red and angry. Also blood all over my bed sheets.

Maybe I've aggravated it by scratching, but with rushing to put a dressing on and get my dog some medical attention, I didn't realise how deep it is. I'm a bit worried now! Confused

You need a tetanus and antibiotics which they give automatically for an animal bite as they get so easily infected.

warmfluffytowels · 05/07/2021 08:05

Please go and get it seen to. Dog bites can turn nasty very quickly. The hospital will clean it properly and give you some antibiotics. Take regular anti-inflammatories for the swelling too.

lunar1 · 05/07/2021 08:11

You need antibiotics at least. When my son was attacked he was put on two lots for 10 days. I can't remember what they gave him now. It wasn't a deep bite, he was wearing thick jeans at the time.

It was the same breed, the fucking owner thought she could walk 7 dogs at once.

If you’re worried, which you should be, perhaps see a doctor, as per the previous fifty replies?

Obviously I will. Hmm But I need to get children to school first!

OP do you have a partner? They need to sort out the kids while you get to hospital - I’m not sure you’re appreciating the severity of the risk. Don’t delay, find someone who can take the kids to school and go now.

shipperssss · 05/07/2021 09:50

Don't delay getting looked at, especially since you're pregnant.

I do but he's away with work. Sad Kids are dropped off and I'm away to A&E. Smile

Bless you OP, I’m glad you’re off to be seen and hope you’re okay

Hm2020 · 05/07/2021 10:25

Hope your ok op sounds nasty

cheeseisnice · 05/07/2021 14:02

I've had the wound flushed and cleaning properly and been given a tetanus. I'm just on my way home now. Thanks everyone for making me get seen to. Hopefully the police will do something about the dog now so that it never bites a child or attacks another passing dog. x

FeatheredHope · 05/07/2021 14:19

Glad you’re ok OP. Did they not give you antibiotics? If not, I hope they emphasised that if there’s even a HINT of infection, don’t wait until the next morning to be seen again!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/07/2021 14:37

I was told by A and E that antibiotics are always given as infection can occur extremely quickly therefore given as standard.

MrMeSeeks · 05/07/2021 18:08

Not surprised it’s that way, sounds like a really crap owner!
Hope you and ddog ok op! Hopefully your poor dog will have no lasting damage.
It’s a shame, her poor dog will suffer for her actions!
Some people should not have animals Angry

That's made me concerned now, I didn't really think about the dog too much. Confused I'd be absolutely devastated if the poor animal was put to sleep or something. I just want her to have a rethink about leaving a little child in charge, public places, other dogs and maybe a muzzle.

I was given antibiotics at the hospital but nothing was prescribed, so I brought nothing home with me at all!

I would suggest that the doctors have done what they thought was safe and appropriate given that you are pregnant @cheeseisnice. Of course go back if the wounds become red and inflamed or you feel unwell. I doubt the dog will be pts as a result of this. She will probably be fined and the given a vicious dog notice.

MaitlandGirl · 06/07/2021 05:26

If you follow up with your GP tomorrow they should have had the discharge info from the hospital by then. The GP will be able to prescribe antibiotics if you should have them.

It's vanishingly unlikely that the dog will be PTS over one incident.

What will probably happen is the dog warden will go and have a word with her and tell her it mustn't happen again. If it does, she could be subject to an aggressive dog order (I think that's the name) and told the dog must be leashed and muzzled at all times in public.

Only if she fails to do that will their be any chance of the dog being taken off her.

Saltyslug · 07/07/2021 04:12

You need to report, the outcome could have been so much more serious for both yourself and your dog. This JR has the potential to do life changing damage and it’s owners are deciding not to take steps to keep the public and other animals safe

AngelDelightUk · 07/07/2021 04:33

Did you report it to the police? Hope you and your dog are healing nicely
