Just got puppy back from the groomer

Hi, this is only my second time taking him, and it was a different groomer. He’s only 4.5 months so I was expecting a tidy up but he’s been given a full clip. I’m worried because I always thought they weren’t meant to have their coat clipped until 6 months, I even mentioned this to the groomer before he went in. Please could someone reassure me his coat isn’t ruined forever? Please be gentle with me, I’ve tried to read up and do everything right and think I’m a bit in shock right now! He was v fluffy before and now he’s all short.

What sort of dog is it?

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 30/06/2021 17:31

He’s a total mix! Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese

I don't know the answer to your question but what were you expecting him to be clipped like? Did they know he was under six months?

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 30/06/2021 17:49

Yes they knew, and I told them again before the groom. I thought it would be a little trim of his feet, round his bum and his face, and then she said if she clipped his coat on his body she would do it quite long and this would be ok, but he’s clipped quite close. I do get anxiety sometimes and hoping it’s just that but there’s a voice in me worrying it’s ruined his adult coat. I know there’s nothing I can do about it now so this is a bit pointless but I know there’s lots of knowledgeable people here so thought if I could get reassurance it might help me.

He’s probably about an inch long now on his body. It’s probably a bit of shock because of how different he looks now as he’s loads lighter.

It'll be fine. Much easier to take care of shorter fur. It's a shock when it's unexpected and sudden though

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 30/06/2021 17:53

I have found this which has reassured me a bit www.houndgames.com/wp-content/cache/wp-rocket/houndgames.com/puppys-first-cut/index-https.html_gzip

Thank you @GiveMeNovocain (think I need some now!) that’s exactly what I needed to hear Flowers

Did they explain why they had clipped so much? Was he matted?

GiveMeNovocain · 30/06/2021 17:59

Honestly the first time my pup came home from the groomers dd almost cried and I had to hide my shock. You'll be so glad you got it done if it gets hotter and when you're picking out grass seeds though. My dog hides them in her moustache 😂

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 30/06/2021 18:05

Not matted at all, I’ve been brushing him a lot. I wonder if they just thought it would be better for him.

Is he double or single coated? (with that mix it could be either)

Double coats are best not clipped (you get them stripped instead) but for a single coat coat, a clipping won't make any difference at all. And even for double coated, it's not a big deal really, though you might want to opt for stripping in future

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 30/06/2021 18:19

Pretty certain single coated. Thank you for reassuring me. I’m calming down a bit now and getting used to it. I’ve just been so concerned about doing everything’right’ I think this has just bothered me. Think he’ll definitely be happier if the sun comes out again....

He'll be fine, honestly :)

And you'll find he's much happier in the summer with a shorter coat. It was hot here today and the longer haired dogs I saw out were visibly struggling at times.

BiteyShark · 30/06/2021 19:46

I get my WCS clipped short especially over the summer. It is far more practical especially when he runs through brambles and then dives into a mud bath.

Unless you wanted a particular 'show' cut I wouldn't worry and I think sometimes it's like when we have had a different style haircut when you hate it at first but then you get used to it.
