How expensive is a dog to keep?

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a puppy. I like to budget quite carefully so I have enough to go to my savings every month. Can someone help me with how much a dog will cost me every year. I can work out food and pet insurance but what vaccines do they need every year and how much would they cost?
I'm thinking of getting a westie or a similar sized dog. I have budgeted £1500 for the cost of the dog.

TIA

Forgot boosters £35 per year
Supplements £100 per year

In addition to all the other costs mentioned above, there's housing. I got a dog when I wasn't really intending to (long story, I like to call him "accidentally acquired")

I'm renting, so this means I have a vastly reduced choice of where I can live, as few landlords accept dogs. I continue to live in a flat with chronic damp because of ddog.

I also have to rent a flat that has a garden for ddog, which means that I have to spend more on rent each month.

When it comes to buying a house, I have trouble getting a mortgage (not for ddog related reasons) but again I need a garden which accepts a premium, so I'll end up with a home in a much less desirable area than I would've without ddog in tow.

The additional cost of renting alone costs me c. £200 pcm

It's a good job he's cute!

Insurance £35
Care plan inc worming fleas and vaccines £12
Food £40
Treats £3

Sudden vet bills not worth claiming occasional £50-100

I do t claim if something
Little as it pushes premium up

Mine averages about £40 a month now the high initial costs have been met. But I don't need daycare or boarding

Gosh. A lot to think about.
So I need a decent food supplier.
Does after first jabs does the dog get a booster every year? How do I know when it's due? Don't think I'll need a dog Walker but I suspect we'll need kennels for holidays abroad (whenever that will happen).
Ticks are a nuisance here. Does the flea treatment cover that? I'm tempted to go with a vet plan.
Thanks a lot for the replied. You are all very helpful.
I wish I'd thought of long term costs before having my children Wink

As dogs age, insurance becomes more expensive and now we have to pay 50% of all vets bills. Last month that was £3000.

So our vets always emailed or texted when a booster was due, and I’d think most will do that these days. Or you can ask when the booster is due when they have the jab, and set an alert on your phone.

Some flea treatments cover ticks, some don’t - I think you can get pills now that cover them against ticks? Or you can get tick collars - but they’re very toxic to aquatic life, so not great if your dog swims.

Some vets offer a 'vaccine for life' deal. It's normally £100 one off payment (after the puppy jabs) that covers the annual booster. It just means you have to keep going to that vet.

Westies are the besties Grin The only downside to their utter adorableness is they can be prone to skin problems, which can be very expensive. You need to research your breeder carefully and be prepared to wait a year or possibly more for a puppy.

Care costs will go up as the dog ages. Older dogs get health issues.

Westies need regular grooming. I groom my own as I don't want him clipped. A lot of fur comes out. I've got two long haired dogs and over the 6 years have saved about $5k grooming them myself. Actually I just googled and it's way more than that - I'd just guessed $50/groom and it's much more expensive where I am.

If you want to contain costs, short haired breeds are easier to maintain.
