Dog keeps jumping on the kitchen table

He does it when we aren't in the room so I've no idea how to stop him. I come into the kitchen to find him quickly jumping down and DH has caught him asleep on it a couple of times.

Does anyone have any advice on how we can stop him from doing this please?

Can you not let him in there unattended? Or block it off somehow? Is there food on there he's after? If he likes being up you could get him a raised bed so he's off the floor but at a safer height?

Make somewhere in the kitchen more appealing - comfy bed, treats in a corner etc? Is he stressed or worried about something? I've cats, not dogs, and they get bloody everywhere. I just sanitize the surfaces multiple times a day as and when I use them as I've given up.

How long have you had him? We had a total counter surfer (ex street dog). Light on his paws too so we often couldn’t hear him. Little shit managed to jump on dining room table and then through the hatch into the kitchen a few days after we brought him home. We just instilled a firm no / down when we caught him, restricted access when we weren’t there and, didn’t allow him into the furniture at all until we were confident he had stopped doing this. Grew out of it.

Shut the kitchen door?

idontlikealdi · 30/06/2021 12:18

Gate him off.

Bargebill19 · 30/06/2021 12:22

Shut him out of the kitchen.
We had a Hungarian mudi that did this. It was his way of keeping guard whilst we were out. Being high up meant he could see out of the windows.
Never managed to break his habit. Here he is at 16.

How big is he? Years ago we had a dog that did this - simple solution was to tuck in the chairs he used as staging posts.

Also avoid leaving any food up there, so it's as unrewarding a past time as possible.

Thank you for the replies. Hes almost one, we've had him since he was 8 weeks (not a rescue) but hes only just figured out he can do this!

We keep all the chairs tucked in but unfortunately he can jump from the ground even though he isn't a big dog at all. Just a little cocker spaniel that's on the small side anyway! And he does it when theres no food out.

Shutting him out isnt really an option as there isnt really any other room I'd feel comfortable leaving him alone in, we dont have a utility or anything and theres too many cables in the sitting room.

The raised bed is a good shout I will look into that! I think he does prefer to be high up for some reason.

I agree with getting him a raised bed my old dog always climbed on the sofa to look out of the window untill we got him a box to stand on.

Also can you put things in his way on the table that he will knock off and give him a bit of a scare but not hurt him ?
Tupperware with a bit of water in empty ( washed out ) pop / food tins, plastic bottles etc

Bunglemom · 30/06/2021 14:10

I feel your pain!
My just turned 1 year old cocker spaniel has started jumping up the dining table (never ever done this before!) and pinching food!

I have tried everything, but i think its come to the point now where we will lock him in the kitchen as he cant be left near the table!

If you find anything that helps please let me know

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 14:43

My beagle does this too Grin

The only way to stop him is to either put the chairs up on the table when we leave the room, or keep him out of the room if we're not around.
