@SweetLathyrus thank you so much for replying! I love that your cat runs the house! I think ours may be similar. Our cat is absolutely massive so will be much bigger than the pup for quite a while at least. He does like being high up on windowsills etc. so that is great advice, thank you. Thanks for the tip about brain training too, I’m very happy to do lots of that so will have a look for ideas. I really want to get her signed up to puppy class when I can.

One concern I have is that I don’t know that many people with dogs so I’m hoping I can socialise her OK. We live on an estate with lots of dogs so hoping walks will help and the few friends I have with dogs are lined up for play dates. There’s also a doggy adventure park nearby I can take her to, but it’s still a worry!

ToastandJamandTea · 28/06/2021 19:38

Hi all! Can we join in please? I picked up puppy Toast last Tuesday and he will be 9 weeks tomorrow. He's been really good so far. Sleeps all night in his crate (10-6) and very few accidents in the house as the garden door is always open for him to get out.
We are struggling with the jumping up and nipping, especially in my 5 year old. The thing is I know it's her we need to train as if she would just turn away and ignore him like the rest of us do, he would lose interest very quickly Confused.
He's learned sit, wait and come here already and I just get the feeling he's going to be trouble... Gorgeous trouble though!Grin

@ToastandJamandTea ah cute little fluff ball at the moment!

Ilikewinter · 28/06/2021 20:22

@Turquoisesol.
We had Samoyeds and a Husky previously but I dont remember them doing the herding and biting my feet, slippers, anything he can attack....plus he doesnt so it to DH so its obvious who he thinks is alpha!. Also hes screamed the house down when we tried to leave him in the kitchen today, so need to work on that and fast. How is your collie doing now?!

Turquoisesol · 28/06/2021 20:39

She is doing ok. It’s like there is always an “issue” to fix. Biting is almost sorted. We have had lead biting (getting better) barking and lunging at cars (still working on) and now she is barking and trying to chase planes/birds in the sky now

lifelongfrugaleer · 28/06/2021 20:53

For biting arms we say "hand no" Then distract. Doest always work bit more than not

Aria20 · 28/06/2021 21:18

@Turquoisesol there is always something lol! Currently for us it's barking for attention! No other reason doesn't need toilet, has eaten, had a walk, had playtime/training/mental stimulation just purely if I start to play with my youngest -bit of jealousy!!

Turquoisesol · 28/06/2021 21:38

There is always something aria. And every time I despair and lose my confidence that I won’t be able to figure out what to do about it.

17CherryTreeLane · 28/06/2021 23:40

Cherrypup is now almost 5 months. In some ways it sooo much easier, but we now have other issues!

The biting is mostly sorted, but not completely- he likes a lunge every now & again. The pees & poos are all outside and lead walking is ok(ish).

BUT...we now have jumping up at kitchen counters, barking like mad at bedtime & hating his crate. Worst of all is he's quite big now and likes to jump on the sofa which I know is really bad for him.

@Nordstrom we had similar worries recently and popped up the vet. They gave us special food to try him on for a couple of days to see if it helps.

ashmts · 28/06/2021 23:59

@Ilikewinter No wonder he screamed the place down, you only got him yesterday. His whole world has been turned upside down. Pups need to feel secure before you can start to think about leaving them. I know you've had dogs before but maybe the advice has changed since then? The Facebook group I mentioned earlier is really helpful for advice on building up leaving them while minimising the risk of separation anxiety. It might sound counter intuitive but forcing him to be alone now will probably cause more problems in the long run.

@Aria20 cute. He looks really fluffy, is he full working strain?

Ilikewinter · 29/06/2021 05:56

@ashmts I wasnt leaving him home alone, just trying to go for a shower without him trying to follow me up the stairs!.

Nordstrom · 29/06/2021 06:34

Thanks @17CherryTreeLane. We did end up taking her to the vets yesterday (just as I was trying to serve up dinner!) as she vomited quite a lot again. All fine upon examination and just advice for some probiotics, food little and often whilst it settles.

You need eyes in the back of you head!

ashmts · 29/06/2021 08:19

@Ilikewinter it's so difficult at first, my DP ended up in hospital about a week after we got ours and I had to get my SIL to come round and sit with the puppy while I had showers/naps etc! Some people say to take them to the bathroom with you but ours wasn't puppy proofed and it was too stressful.

Ilikewinter · 29/06/2021 09:24

@ashmts I know its stressfull this puppy stage! Today pups got a gurgling tummy, he was wormed at the vets on Sunday so hoping its nothing serious, hes still playing and peeing, pooping but hasnt eaten this morning.

Wolfcub · 29/06/2021 14:47

Did anyone else find that their pup slept a lot the day after second jabs?

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/06/2021 15:05

It would be hard for me to tell. AwesomePup sleeps a lot every day. He's settled into quite a routine of long naps and short periods of activity during the day, then a longer period of being awake in the evenings when we all come home (dd1 is at home through the day, but she's quite strict about enforcing naps so he doesn't get too hyper).

He's getting better about being left in a room on his own now, but he still only really lasts about 5-10 minutes before he starts crying, and that's after being here 4 weeks.

lifelongfrugaleer · 29/06/2021 16:23

Yes wolf. Life pup was definitely out of sorts after stabby jabby

Aria20 · 29/06/2021 18:08

@ashmts she is working cocker mum and dad was was worker cross show so she def has some wavy fluffy hair going on!

Aria20 · 29/06/2021 18:19

@SweetLathyrus I tried putting a little warm water to soak the millies today and it did soften it but she wasn't very keen on it! She wasn't sick though at least as she didn't guzzle it! Do you think the countryside mix which is 70/30 is too rich and maybe I should try a 60/40?

YanTanTethera123 · 29/06/2021 18:49

Please may I join? YanTanpup is 5 and a half months old and a Romanian rescue; she arrived last Saturday morning. She was rescued from a kill shelter so probably had a horrific start to her life.
She’s very nervous of just about everything outside the front door but doing incredibly well with house-training and walking on the lead for short distances.
I wonder if anyone has advice on socialising an older pup? She’s clearly frightened of people, children, traffic and other dogs. Luckily we live in a small very quiet estate. Thank you.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/06/2021 19:12

Welcome @YanTanTethera123. Are you Cumbrian? Just based on your username, nowhere else seems to count like that.
Sorry I don't have any experience of rescue dogs at all, but good luck with it. I suspect she'll need lots of time and patience to get used to life with you.🐶

lifelongfrugaleer · 29/06/2021 19:21

I would suggest back to the start as a new born but with allowance for scares. We got our last rescue at a year and some of the stuff he was scared of was bonkers. We were more cautious than with a younger pup

@Aria20 it might be, but I would really checked with Millie's themselves, they are super helpful, and certainly used to have a nutritionist on hand to answer questions.

SweetLathyrus · 29/06/2021 19:46

I keep forgetting to add, you pup is an absolute poppet!

LadyCatStark · 29/06/2021 21:24

Yes, I was tempted to take him back for another lot the next day 😂
