Toilet training a 9 week old

LambLamb · 26/06/2021 19:32

We bought home our first puppy last week and he is settling in great. I have seen on various websites etc that he can go in the garden before he has his final set of jabs, to toilet train. But our vet has said that he must until he has had all jabs due to the risk of lungworm and other diseases.
Please could you let me know what you do? At the moment, I take him out on the patio but he is keen to get on the grass.
Thanks!

We took our puppy out in the garden from 8 weeks. Where does the vet suggest you toilet him?

LambLamb · 27/06/2021 16:09

Indoors on pads, which he won't do. OK, I feel better now someone else is taking them out.

Your own garden should be fine, unless other people have access with dogs of unknown vaccination status. Friends with vaccinated dogs can visit you and you and your puppy can visit them. You should not go into public spaces at all with him until after his jabs are finished and your vet tells you when. So no streets, parks, beaches, fields.

Your garden is absolutely fine if it's private and enclosed

We never used puppy pads, as our dog just chewed them and I don't see the sense in teaching your puppy to toilet indoors. We have been taking him out into the garden from day 1 (as has the breeder)

I’ve never heard that they can’t go out in your own garden before they’re fully vaccinated!

BiteyShark · 27/06/2021 17:22

We took ours out in the garden from day 1

Very strange advice, never heard it before. Unless there are some strange/unusual circumstances, take them out.

Why would you teach a puppy that it’s OK to wee in the house?

Well we used to get an awful lot of foxes in the garden of our last house so that was a potential risk I guess. But we still took puppies and older rescues out there to toilet train.

We've been taking puppy out into our garden/patio from the day we brought him home. He was fairly reliable at going outside for the toilet from 9 weeks (we'd had him a week by then). He's now 12 weeks and he asks to go out if he needs to. We're trying to get him to ring a bell when he wants to go out but he hasn't got the hang of that yet.
