Where does your dog sleep?

Getting a rescue dog this week our first time to have a dog and wondering where you all let your dogs sleep? And if you enclose the dog in a playpen?
I only know one dog owner and she uses a type of playpen with the dogs bed in the middle and shuts the dog in at night time, the dog sleeps in a spare room downstairs .
Do any of you use playpens at night to stop the dogs wondering about?

My dog started out in a crate down stairs until I read about a house fire where the dog died as it couldn’t escape its crate, I then moved her to my bedroom. She sleeps on the end of my bed now.

DeadButDelicious · 23/06/2021 09:10

On our bed *. This morning she had snuggled her way in between us and was snoring away happily. Bless her.

*Rescue pug, takes up a surprising amount of room. Grin

In the dining room area (but open plan) in her bed, tucked in with her blanket when I go to bed! She doesn't move, not even when I get up - I have to turf her out! (Lurcher). She was a rescue dog and she has slept there from the first night.
Have fun with your new dog :)

If you decide you'd like new dog to sleep away from you e.g. in the kitchen, you may need to spend the first few nights sleeping in there with them e.g. on a campbed till they've settled into your house.

Dog has the choice of basket, rug or blanket, or some combination of the three. He chooses the cold floor of the kitchen. Weird creature...

Floralnomad · 23/06/2021 09:30

Ours started in a pen as a puppy and then once reliably house trained started coming upstairs to bed . He normally sleeps on my bed for a couple of hours and then I take him into his own bedroom where he sleeps on a double bed .

Crappyfridays7 · 23/06/2021 09:42

10 month old pup sleeps on his bed in the living room sometimes with a cat - depends who refuses to leave at bed time. He has a crate which he will go into but likes his raised bed best. He’s not allowed upstairs either.

cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 10:03

Mine moves between my bed and dd's. She occasionally chooses her own bed for a short while but mostly that's beneath her

30degreesandmeltinghere · 23/06/2021 10:06

4 ddogs. 2 in the kitchen and 2 on a sofa in the room next to that.
Used to have a bigger sofa where they all slept but downsized and now only 2 fit on!! Was actually amusing when they realised!
Felt a right cow!!

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 23/06/2021 10:50

DDog1 (unfortunately lost her 18 months ago) was initially in a dog bed in the dining room / kitchen. She wouldn't settle so we bought her a crate and she chose to sleep in there. I think it was her little safe space and she used it for her whole 15 years.
I will say once she got to 14 and started waking up and randomly howling in the night we moved the crate to our bedroom which settled her back down.

Ddog2 used to sleep with ddog1 until we lost her. Now he's in his own little bed in our bedroom (he was almost 12 when we lost DDog1 and it felt cruel to make him sleep on his own for the first time ever at that age).

I would definitely try a crate OP, but be prepared that it may not help / work for your dog and have other beds around and consider the possibility of baby gates etc. Essentially, try various things until you find what works!

roadwarrior · 23/06/2021 10:59

Our beagle sleeps in a basket at the foot of DDs bed.

Sisisimone · 23/06/2021 12:06

Mostly on his bed in our bedroom. Until about 5am when he sneaks onto the bed for his morning cuddles

idontlikealdi · 23/06/2021 12:13

Initially downstairs behind a stair gate in an area zoned off from the alarm, now he starts off downstairs, and then rotated between the shower which he loves, under or on the kids beds, on the floor next to me and then in our bed at some point around 5am.

He kept digging at the gate and he's old and cute so gets away with it!

RIBlue · 23/06/2021 12:16

On his bed in the kitchen with the door shut. Previous house he had the run of downstairs and would sometimes choose the sofa but there is no way to close off the stairs in this house and he likes to pop up and downstairs to check on us during the night. He’s only small but this sounds like throwing a bag of bowling balls down the stairs at regular intervals so that’s a no go! He comes upstairs at at 6am for an hour cuddle in bed.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/06/2021 12:57

Downstairs on dog beds in the kitchen.
We've had them all from puppies and it's what they're used to, though I did take one camping and she spent the whole night curled up next to me.

PacifyLulu · 23/06/2021 14:15

What can you tell us about the dog OP? What age and breed? What’s the background?

weegiepower · 23/06/2021 14:18

On my bed, then up shakes his head waking everyone wonders onto his bed down the hall, sleeps there a bit, wakes up comes back onto the bed (repeat over and over)
In hindsight I'd not let a dog sleep on my bed again, but he's 12 now and not going to stop him at this age! But I put clean sheets on 2/3 times a week which is a real pain!

WeAllHaveWings · 23/06/2021 14:21

Until 18 months old our labrador was a chewer so he slept in crate to keep him and my furniture safe!

During day he sleeps either in his bed downstairs or on the sofa on beside us.

At night mostly in his bed on upstairs landing, but occasionally goes down to the sofa too. Never allowed in bedrooms day or night.

olidora63 · 23/06/2021 14:25

Under my duvet😀

ForestYeti · 23/06/2021 14:29

In a crate in the sitting room, he takes himself in there during the day too if he fancies a nap

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/06/2021 14:38

In a crate in the hall till 9 months old, then just in the lounge on the sofa but he should be in his bed.
His job is partly guard dog, not much use if he's locked in a crate!

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 23/06/2021 14:46

Aimed to have him sleep in a crate in the kitchen however he was severe separation anxiety and can’t be crated or left in the kitchen so sleeps (usually in the most inconvenient of places) in our bedroom. He will start on his bed but then moves around the room, usually smushing himself against the washing basket. He rarely wanders unless it’s downstairs to get a drink or sometimes he will sleep in the hall / spare room if it’s super hot.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/06/2021 14:49

When he was younger he slept in the kitchen with the door closed (small bungalow so our bedroom is like 8 feet from the kitchen door) once he got older and I could trust him not to go to the toilet in the carpets or chew all our stuff, he has free run of the house, but his bed is in our room. He sleeps on the couch a lot though.

Daisy829 · 23/06/2021 14:52

On our bed. Generally on my feet.

RickOShay · 23/06/2021 14:53

I don’t like crates at all.
He used to sleep on my bed, I loved feeling the weight of him with my feet. Best place.
