Dogs are polyphasic sleepers. This means they sleep in short periods, like to get up and move around as well as changing positions.
Changing surfaces that they sleep on also helps them regulate their temperature.
Therefor, crating dogs goes against their natural way of sleeping and removes all option of them fulfilling this instinctive behaviour.

Nope! Put the crate where you are going to ultimately leave it/the room you want your dog to sleep in.
I crate trained, after a few weeks I left the flap up. I only crate trained because I had a Labrador and he chewed constantly, even in his sleep.

Cute pup!

We crate trained downstairs without too many issues at all. He woke a bit to start but really not bad. He's bad in other ways don't worry!

He's still in a crate at night at 6 months now.

I bought him up to our en-suite this week in the crate overnight as he was poorly.

I don't think you need to go to the extra effort of being in the same room and I wanted to start how I intended to go on...

We put the crate in the bedroom for 2 or 3 nights and then on the landing for a few nights and then downstairs.

We had to do a middle of the night toilet trip for the first 2 nights and then he slept through. Easy peasy.

He's nearly 3 and loves the crate. He goes in during the day sometimes and settles in there every night.

I put him in an enclosed play pen with a cosy crate inside it until 12 weeks in our bedroom. I think it gave him a good start and as pp said, he loved being able to come out of the crate and move around.

We popped ours into cardboard box at night for the first few nights. By our bed and DH could stroke her if she was unsettled. Then into her crate on the kitchen.
