We are looking for large, friendly, intelligent, biddable, and non-shedding. We've looked at poodles, water dogs and giant Snauzer, have I missed anything?

Grin
Large Lurcher instead? We have 2 small ones. Best ddogs ever.

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 08:25

Staffies and lurchers shed.

QueenOfToast · 15/06/2021 08:32

Airedale terrier?

mrsrobin · 15/06/2021 08:39

What is it with everyone wanting "non-shedding" dogs? If you want a dog the vast majority lose hair - part and parcel of having a dog! You just need to vacuum more! Sorry about mini rant!
The only non shedders or near non shedders are poodles, wirey/types or Mexican Hairless

PollyRoulson · 15/06/2021 08:55

Read Kim Brophy's Meet your dog

A must for all prospective new dog owners. It explains what each dog breed needs and you can then see whether their needs fit in with your expectations or what you can offer

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 09:01

@mrsrobin some people can only tolerate non-shedding dogs. My DP for example. Sneezes within seconds around most breeds, absolutely fine with our dog. It isn’t just some fad for most people.

mrsrobin · 15/06/2021 09:04

Yes, I expect that is an issue for some people, I just think there are an awful lot more people mentioning they are looking for this type of dog lately.
Sorry for the off topic, OP.

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 09:05

I know a lot of people who never thought they could have a dog who are now owners, because they have discovered they can tolerate non-shedding dogs. It really is nothing to do with not wanting to constantly vacuum the carpet.

Mabelene · 15/06/2021 09:19

There does seem to be an awful lot of people with dog/cat allergies who still want a dog/cat Confused

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 09:21

Why the confused face? My DP loves dogs but he’s allergic to some of them. Lots of people are the same.

Mabelene · 15/06/2021 10:01

Some people are, yes, but there seems to be an extremely high number at the moment

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 10:02

And?

Mabelene · 15/06/2021 10:09

And what? Obviously dog allergies are very much on the increase

Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 10:17

Perhaps. I don’t know the evidence. I do know a lot of families who once thought they couldn’t own a dog now have them, which is really nice.

weaselwords · 15/06/2021 10:28

I think you’ve got the main ones. Giant Schnauzers are very big dogs, much bigger than a Portuguese Water Dog for example.
I once met a Russian terrier, who was also a big dog but absolutely gorgeous. He made such an impression on me. Get one of those so I can live through you 😆
And given the amount of shed fur that’s just been cleared up from my house from two, very short haired weimaraners, non-shedding seems like a great idea.

tabulahrasa · 15/06/2021 10:49

Airedale
Russian terrier
Irish water spaniel
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Standard sized Xoloitzcuintle
Komondor
Bouvier des Flandres
Lagotto Romagnolo

If it’s an allergy issue though - whoever has the allergy would need to spend time with the breed as it’s usually not fur that’s the issue, it’s skin and saliva.

SheepyToaster · 15/06/2021 12:13

I'll ignore the 'why so you want non shedding?' Hmm

Some good ideas there, thank you!

OP posts:
Jahebejrjr · 15/06/2021 13:28

@tabulahrasa I think most people realise that. The reason why people refer to non-shedding is that the hair traps the dander. More shed hair, more dander.

RunningFromInsanity · 15/06/2021 13:38

I have a shepherd mix who sheds like anything, a poodle and 2 goldendoodles who all don’t shed at all.
I will never get a dog that sheds again.
It’s literally life changing!

Mabelene · 15/06/2021 13:51

That’s a shame for all the dogs that shed Sad

SheepyToaster · 15/06/2021 14:08

You really can't win on here sometimes!

Thanks to those who were helpful.

Wheaten terrier? Not big but not small.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 15/06/2021 14:15

I’d never have considered a Portuguese Water Dog tbh but a friend of mine has fairly recently rescued a young dog. He is adorable, very trainable and just a generally all round great family dog. Energetic but not too high energy, intelligent, friendly. He was very mouthy when young though but nothing that couldn’t be handled. I’d definitely consider one in future.
