Walkies!

How often do you take your dogs for a walk and for how long? I have chihuahuas and a friend of mine says she takes her chihuahua for 5 hour walks every day and an extra hour in the morning and evening! Firstly, I don’t have that time and secondly my dogs would be shattered if I tried. (I don’t know if it’s a ‘I’m better than you because my dogs are walked more’ comment but seems a lot!)

Usually 1-2 hours on one walk. But that is off lead and he is a spaniel so runs around like a loon during it so one walk a day is plenty.

FeelinSpendy · 10/06/2021 13:46

So your friend is spending 7 hours a day walking a chihuahua?! That seems almost impossible and is impractical for most people. For smaller breeds I think 2 walks - one for half an hour and one for an hour is fine. Particluarly if you have a garden they can run about in and they get off-lead time. Maybe a longer walk on the weekends.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/06/2021 13:51

Walking ANY dog for seven hours a day is ridiculous & a blatant lie, let alone a chihuahua.
My collie cross gets an hr in the morning, 1-2hrs in the evening, plenty off-lead & different activities like canicross, agility, swimming etc.

Mymapuddlington · 10/06/2021 13:58

Glad it’s not just me thinking 7 hours is ridiculous! Mine get an hour or two a day, off lead time in the field and I have a garden, sometimes we have longer walks and when it’s too hot they have a shorter early morning or evening walk when it’s cooler.

That's insane. And clearly not true. I have had some very active dogs but even they would struggle with a 7 hour walk a day. Besides, who on earth has nothing better to do all day than walk their dog??

I currently walk my dog off-lead for about 45 minutes in the morning and late afternoon. He also has a lunchtime quick walk (around the block) and a last walk before bed (also on the lead). so in total? Maybe 2 to 2h5 a day?

cupsofcoffee · 10/06/2021 14:49

1-2 hours a day normally, though occasionally he does more.

When we go further, we always stop mid-way for lunch/a drink and a rest in the shade for him, and always carry some food and water.

There is no WAY she walks a chihuahua for seven hours a day Hmm

cupsofcoffee · 10/06/2021 14:50

Oh and I meant to add, he's a beagle and his walks are mostly off-lead. he was three in February.

DeathByWalkies · 10/06/2021 15:02

The only way that could possibly be true is if she takes her dog everywhere with her, only patronises dog friendly shops, cafes etc and counts any second when the dog is outside the house as a walk... And even then I'm incredibly sceptical and really just giving the benefit of the doubt!

Even my young JRT X, who has a lot of stamina, struggled after we were out for 6 hours once. We stopped for a bite to eat, I looked down at him sitting under the table and realised he was nodding off while still sitting up Blush

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/06/2021 15:05

My dog would probably die being walked for that long (well no he'd lay down and protest) but surely that's unsustainable during the hot weather

XiCi · 10/06/2021 15:19

Surely that is complete bullshit. Do you actually believe her? If its true she's totally irresponsible and setting those dogs up for an injury. Between 30 mins and 2 hours is usually recommended depending on the breed

allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/06/2021 15:26

I've got a JRT and a JRT/Beagle. They walk for minimum an hour a day, but a lot of that is pottering around and running errands with me.

We live in a city, but have a long skinny garden, so they get their off-lead time there or at the park.

No WAY would they want to do 7 hours of walking a day. They'd go on strike.

XiCi · 10/06/2021 15:46

Just a quick Google recommends chihuahuas have 20-30 minutes a day. She was probably taking the piss

Sitdowncupoftea · 16/06/2021 11:03

I dont even walk my dogs that far and they are huskies.

TheDiddlyGang · 16/06/2021 12:04

So many negative responses accusing this lady of lying.

I would just like to say that I am at a stay at home mum, I have fuck all else to do and I do regularly walk my dog 4 + hours a day.
I have walked 7 (and more!) before and as for this ridiculous notion that a chihuahua wouldn’t be capable, why?
Because it’s small..?
My BILs miniature dachshund can easily out walk my dog and she is an active working breed.

TheDiddlyGang · 16/06/2021 12:10

Mind you, I wouldn’t walk her in this heat.
But in short I wouldn’t be so quick to accuse this lady of lying.
Most dogs are chronically underexercised in this country and struggle to do long walks because they are unfit.

PollyRoulson · 16/06/2021 13:30

Ohhhh that would be a fab way to spend every day 7 hours of walking my dogs....
