Hi all,

My 13week old pup has been all vaccinated up and ready for walks for the past few days. We've been looking forward to this and thought he would love it as he gets bored around the house now but HE HATES IT. At first it was the harness and lead, but he has grown accustomed to that now. But every time we take him out he seems really distressed and just whimpers to get up and get carried. The only way to get him to walk is if I walk with him and my dd runs ahead and he tries to catch her as he absolutely dotes on her but she can't come every walk. Please tell me this will just click one day soon? I have tried a treat and lots of praise when he walks but he's not very food motivated so sometimes he won't even take the treat. He's absolutely amazing in every other way, I just want the poor wee guy to enjoy his walks 😪

Can you drive him to the park so that he will be walking on the grass as that may be a better place to start .

Try throwing the treat a little way ahead and gradually increase the distance. Also what I found really helpful was practicing lead walking in the garden, then really quiet areas and gradually building up to busier areas, over the course of a couple of weeks .

He's the same on grass at the moment, which is strange as he's fine in the garden. I have tried the treat but I think I might try taking one of his toys and chucking it a little bit ahead each time. He's so full of life and bold at home and in the garden this has just thrown us a little. Thank you for the help Smile

We have the same with our 17 week pup. If we walk from home she can be encouraged to walk so far before getting too scared and wanting to come home.

Trainer advised us to drive her somewhere and it seems to be working so far. She will walk (badly, training to not pull is another matter!) And is happy to go off lead when we get to a quiet field. We will just keep doing the drive and give her more fun walking experiences before trying again.

I think our problem is she is worried about what is coming along the path behind her as she is constantly looking back to check.

Dont take him for a walk as such just get him out and about. So drive to an area and then just be happy to sit or stand and watch what is going on. Be led by him if he wants to stay still and watch let him, if he wanders a few steps let him. Do this in every new place for a while. Watch his body language carefully if he is lip licking, turning away , trying to hide behind you has whale eyes, panting excessively then go to a quieter location.

He is just a baby and slightly overwhelmed by the big world.

If you go at his pace I can assure you that you will soon be back on this thread asking how to get him to stop pulling Smile
