Can you recommend suitable rescues - Herts

Looking for recommendations for a rescue that might be suitable for us. Preferably one that fosters dogs first. 'Breeds' we are considering (use the terms loosely as aware many will be cross breeds!) include spaniels, retrievers, mini schnauzers, greyhounds, whippets. No highly strung toy dogs or massive muscular breeds that can pull me over (I'm small).

We're in North Herts, have had Wood Green recommended by locals and also have Dogs Trust and Battersea on my radar.

It's our first time owning a dog although I grew up with them. I'm home all day, have primary school age kids. Large-ish secure garden, surrounded by fields and woodland but everyone has a dog around here so likely to bump into other dogs on most walks. We have no other pets.

Aggressive dogs or dogs needing highly skilled handling are out, but we would take an older dog. Appreciate we'll probably be waiting a long time, but getting a puppy doesn't seem like the right thing to do right now, I'd like to try this first.

www.rats-animalrescue.co.uk/dog-view
local dog rescue based in bedfordshire. .not had a dog off them but two cats and been really happy with them

You've got Lozza's Lurcher Rescue in Herts. She fosters dogs first.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 26/05/2021 11:23

It's South Herts but NAWT is the most thorough and responsible rescue I've ever come across. You won't come away from there with a mismatched dog. www.nawt.org.uk/centres/hertfordshire

If you can extend to South Beds I can recommend Appledown Rescue in Eaton Bray near Dunstable.

Thanks all. Yes can definitely get over to Beds, Cambs, London, Essex border

I would second Heathlands. We got our beautiful boy from there, they foster first.

Another vote for Heathlands.

MyPanda · 26/05/2021 20:19

I was going to say Lozza's lurcher rescue.

Also Rovers Dog Rescue www.facebook.com/Rovers-Dog-Rescue-492424450777682/
