Dog stinks

So looking after my sons mental beagle. She's a 2yr intact female.
She just doesn't clean herself . Apparently her old owners used to clean her with baby wipes from being a pup!
I have had to now do the same as she's stinking my house out.
My own dog cleans herself , thought dogs do this naturally?
How can we teach her to clean herself?
Help please , it stinks and she's on season . Mixture of fishy dog fanny and old blood really isn't appealing

Could be her anal glands need emptying.

That can give off a really awful fishy smell.

Wolfiefan · 24/05/2021 13:37

Fish isn’t season smell at all. Does sound more anal gland.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/05/2021 13:41

Right will tell them to take her to the vets .

What can I do about her not cleaning herself though?

Most dogs do when they have a season. If she isn’t I don’t think you can change that. Why do you have the dog? Can you hand it back? Not have it again until it’s spayed.

I'm just looking after her for a couple of days while they have some building work done.
She's an escape artist.
I've messaged them about anal glands .
She doesn't even scoot . At a loss.

Was hoping her watching my dog clean herself she may copy 🤷🏻‍♀️

I didn't think most dogs do clean themselves much.

Never had a bitch in season so don't know what happens with them but I imagine they would need help keeping clean.

You can buy 'Tushie wipes' from somewhere like pets at home, although I think most pet shops sell them.

They're made especially for cleaning dog's rear ends so obviously a lot of dogs don't clean themselves.

Having said she'll smell a lot better and be a lot more comfortable if her glands are clear.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/05/2021 13:52

Messaged them to tell them to book a vet trip ASAP

Mine goes tomorrow for her jabs and bum squeeze. Ear check and dew claw clip.

Watched YouTube NO WAY AM I TRYING THAT 🤮🤮

Dogs don’t need to scoot to have an anal gland issue.

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2021 14:38

Dogs don't need to scoot to have an anal gland issue.

Absolutely.

My dog started having a problem with her anal glands after suffering from awful stomach problems.

She never scooted, ever.

The only reason I found out there was a problem with the glands was because she kept biting at one of her back legs.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/05/2021 14:54

Apologies I thought they did scoot. My dog must just like dragging her ass 🤷🏻‍♀️

Son says he will book her in at the vets

A fishy smell is definitely a sign of anal gland problems. Adding extra fibre to her diet (bran flakes or weetabix are both good) can help in the long-run but for now she'll need them emptying at the vets.

Once that's sorted, the smell should go :)

Brill thanks. She goes back tomorrow evening. Thankfully. Love her to bits except the stink. Nearly got excited as she sat and cocked her leg . But she licked her feet instead. Close 😂

Bless her! Beagles are right little characters Grin

I think anal gland problems are fairly common in the breed though I am eternally grateful that mine has never struggled - he just has a general whiff of cheesy popcorn!

Totally forgot to update the thread. I'm in awe of my daughter-in-law .
She watched aloud of YouTube clips and put on 3 pairs of gloves down a face mask. She cleaned the anal glands herself. She said it's not that bad , dog just stood and waited for it to finish.
Dog no longer smells.
Apparently it was a disgusting stench and gloopy.
