Kicking Myself

Finally let out to have lunch and a drink inside, in town. One of our regular haunts has several floors, and floor to ceiling windows wrapping around. The bar's situated within the market area. We love people watching and, more so, doggy watching. Today, I pointed out to my husband a spaniel coming round the corner with a toy in his mouth. As he reappeared he didn't have the toy. We both noticed this, and I went to the door in the hope that if he'd dropped it I could pick it up and run after his mum to get him his [probably favourite] toy back. I didn't go outside, and didn't see it through the glass door. However, when we left an hour or so later I saw his toy on the pavement.

In normal times I'd have gone out of the pub to check his toy wasn't lying there, but I didn't have my mask on so didn't do that because of the hesitation due to covid rules. Now I really wish I had, although I know it's a bit pathetic to be caring so much that a dog I don't know hasn't got his toy any more (Hmm maybe should have put this in AIBU). I did pick it up and put it on the nearby bench, because it was raining.

Perhaps the dog was fed up with the toy and dropped it deliberately. Comfort yourself with that thought.

What?

I’m sure he has a gazillion toys at home.

I get you. They probably came back for it. 🤞

If he dropped it he wasn't that bothered. Some other dog will probably pick it up and it will become their favourite for a day Smile

Yeah, my dog would be delighted to find an abandoned toy! And I'd be delighted that he'd found something other than a dead pigeon. So some good will likely come of this!

@PeckyOwl and @somethinginthewater > Your comments do make me feel better. Although, @somethinginthewater, my thought was that he was taking a breather and his mum was moving on without noticing. My daft dog has no interest in toys whatsoever, and all our other rescues weren't bothered (don't know whether that's a general thing with sighthounds?) So I will try and put this spaniel out of my mind :-)) and hope that another dog benefits.
