Training for barking from puppyhood

We are getting a lovely little pup soon (miniature poodle) and one thing I really want to avoid is an incessant barker...the kind of dog that barks at everyone and everything. Is there a fool proof way of avoiding this by training as a puppy? Anybody got top tips for this?

I've heard that if you teach the dog to bark on command, they tend not to bark without being told to. Might be worth looking in to? Bear in mind that some breeds are quite vocal, though.

Thanks, seems like socialisation will be key to helping puppy be calm and confident. There's a lot of socialisation to be done between the time of getting pup (8 weeks) and 12 weeks which seems to be the key time to do it, we're going to be busy!
