Looking into getting a new dog, of these two types, which would you all recommend?

These are very different breeds with very different needs a regards exercise (time) and grooming (time or expense). you should read up on what they require and then look at what you can realistically provide for your dog when making your decision.

What kind of things do you want to do with your dog? That will help.
Are you after activity, companionship, training, exercise?
They're both quite particular types, and quite high maintenance I would say.
For me I would go the whippet cross for the long walks & short hair but the mix with Italian greyhound isn't ideal, they're so fragile & precious.
why would someone cross an iggy with a whippet

Beetlewing · 14/05/2021 08:10

Whippet cross. Short walks (and they don't want to at all if it's raining!). no yapping. Easy maintenance. No hairdressing costs. Beautiful to look at.

They often cross Italian greyhounds with whippet's to make them less fragile as very prone to leg fractures, although you'll likely also end up with a higher energy dog than full whippet. Personally I'd just go for a whippet or more sturdy lurcher mix, not keen brachycephalic breeds like Lhasa apso

As above, I'd avoid lhaso apso and Italian greyhound due to potential issues.

Bit if a difference Grin

Grin yep, big difference....I shall explain... We are looking to add to the family, we already have 3 dogs...Old lab, old springer and young small mongrel (jackshit).

Daughter loves the whippet and Italian greyhound types. I think lhasa would get on great with little doggo, and would be great play mate for him.

We walk all dogs at least 3 x a day, live literally opposite a park, and there is ALWAYS someone home.

Basically looking for a small dog with playful nature who likes walks and cuddles.

In that case I would go lhasa - less fragile & a good companion dog.
Grooming will be a pita though.

PeckyOwl · 14/05/2021 12:55

If you want a dog to walk, rather than run around like a loon for 10 minutes then go back to sleep for a few hours, go for the Lhasa rather than the whippet types. Agree that the Lhasa is a far more robust dog - probably more compatible with a jackshit!

Ylvamoon · 14/05/2021 19:01

Go with the Apso.

We had Italian Greyhounds and Whippets... Iggis are fragile and have a delicate sensitive nature... i wouldn't recommend as family pets.

Whippets on the other hand are great- if you like a couch potato!
Not sure about the cross of the two... you could be lucky and get the Whippets personality but then....

Thanks for all the advice. I must admit I am swaying more towards the Lhasa as an ideal friend for our little terrier.

Next question...if I go down the puppy route, should I take our young terrier to meet puppy to see if they 'get on' or is that not advised/a bit daft?
