About to get a puppy...

I'm awaiting the drop off of a puppy at 6pm.

Shitting it!

I've got an older dog, he's 12. Very patient so hoping he'll be okay.

Feeling as prepared as I can be... it's a "second hand" puppy, for lack of a better term. We didn't want to buy straight from breeder and waited for someone who didn't want their pup anymore!

Any sage wisdom/advice? It's been so so long since I've had a pup. 12 years Grin

What age is pup? What are the reasons it’s being sold/given up? Have they returned it to breeder or sold to you privately?

StormcloakNord · 12/05/2021 17:15

Pup is 12 weeks. It was the owners brothers dog who had the puppies & she took one but doesn't have the space so we're getting him tonight!

Don’t try and force the puppy on your dog. Most older dogs don’t really like puppies.
Don’t let the puppy approach the older dog, make sure it’s the other way round.

Payment for further advice must be in the form of puppy photos Grin

We've got a baby gate to keep them separated at night as the older one so far has not enjoyed the experience Grin

He's here, and he's absolutely mental! I've put his collar on but he isn't happy about it!

You know the rules. We need a photo Smile

StormcloakNord · 12/05/2021 21:10

I am frazzled

I don't even know what's happened

One minute life was peaceful and now I'm cradling a puppy's paw because it won't stop crying if I leave the room!!!

Holy moly.

This is harder than a new born 😂

A spaniel? I wish you luck. Luck and patience!

He is beautiful though.

StormcloakNord · 12/05/2021 21:27

I've already got one spaniel! I don't know what I was thinking getting another Grin

I am loving it though. Older dog seems patient and has been good at warning growls/air snaps to keep pup at bay.

Made the mistake of not getting a crate thinking a baby gate between kitchen would do. Clearly not!! DH is away out on a mission to find a dog crate so pup can sleep in our room as there's no way I can leave him howling like he was in the kitchen!

What a beautiful pup!
Hope you get sorted for sleeping arrangements tonight. I remember the lack of sleep well- but tried to savour the puppy snuggles to make up for it!

Sisisimone · 13/05/2021 10:46

Oh he's gorgeous 😍
How was your first night StormcloakNord?

StormcloakNord · 13/05/2021 13:02

@Sisisimone good thank you!!

I'm at work and husband is on pup duty today. He took a while to settle in the crate but he did really well. He went about 3/4 hours each time before I needed to let him out and take him out for pees. Hoping it'll just keep getting easier and he slowly goes longer and longer in his bed!

Oh he’s so beautiful

What have you called him?

StormcloakNord · 13/05/2021 13:50

We seem to have settled on Leo!

The woman who sold us to him said that had been his name for the 2 weeks she had him. He doesn't respond to it at all but I'm guessing that's normal for a puppy!

I was going to change it but I can't think of anything I actually like.

I have a 12 week old wcs, absolutely lovely but needs a fair amount of enforced calm time otherwise becomes mental - they can bomb up and down at a fair speed. All toys have been eschewed in favour of plastic plant pots.

Depends. My 11 week old snaps her head round when I say her name, but I’ve worked hard to teach her it. I’m guessing that the sort of person who would rehome a pup wouldn’t have given that input.

He’s gorgeous - enjoy!

StormcloakNord · 14/05/2021 18:41

@Motorina good to know! He's come on leaps and bounds in the last 2 days.

I took him for a health check today at the Vets just to make sure he was okay and in good health/putting on weight etc. The Vet mentioned we've got a really good bond already which was really lovely to hear.

He's definitely starting to respond to Leo. He looks at me and runs towards me when I say his name in the house so hoping it keeps getting better!

Gorgeous pup op!

We rehomed a 1 year old dog who didn't respond to his name. We kept with it for a couple of weeks then decided he should receive a 'proper' name from people who love him.

He was such a nervy little scrap, with long (for a pug) ears. He reminded me of the Velveteen Rabbit book because I loved him at first sight and he felt the same Grin
