Barking greyhound

Hi there.

Recently adopted a 2 year old retired greyhound.

Everything has been ok, we have had a bit of an issue with her prey drive as she went mad for cats at the start but that is all slowly dwindling out.

However, this past few days when we are on our walks, she has been barking at any other dogs in sight. She gets really alert, ears up, and starts pulling and barking and does not listen if I pull her back and say no firmly.
She is placid and no concerns in the house but I do wonder if there is any way I can correct this sudden barking when dogs of any size are in proximity.

Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you

Hi, we have had our retired greyhound for 2 years now. He didn't start barking at other dogs until a few months after we got him. I think it started once he got used to the routine of going out for walks and new what to expect and possibly grew in confidence. I think 80% of the time he barks because he's excited and wants to play and wants the other dog to see him. And for the other 20% he may be fearful or defensive if it's a larger dog.
I thought it needed nipping in the bud as a large barking greyhound can be off-putting for other owners so my regime has been to offer a treat and get his attention as soon as I see another dog. Use high value treats. Then as the other dogs get closer I say 'good boy' give him another treat. He is normally far more interested in the treat than the other dog. Plus he associates the words 'good boy' with a treat and it keeps his focus on me. We have got to the stage now where if another dog approaches he will look at me for a treat and that diffuses his excitement. I should say though that if another dog is running then it's game over and I've got zero chance of him not barking!!

Hope this helps.
