Dog in bedroom

nopenotplaying · 06/05/2021 22:42

We've sadly just lost our dog. We are due to pick up a puppy in a few weeks and are thinking about the sleeping arrangements. Our previous dog came to us at 1 year old, very nervous. The only way we could get him to settle was to sleep in our room.

Where does your dog sleep? Kitchen? Utility? Your own room? I'm not talking on our bed but in it's own bed in the corner. It will be a big dog 40kg ish when fully grown

Thanks

for 28+ yrs my dogs slept downstairs (exH insisted).

then (post-divorce) I got a rescue who settled well, but when my older dog died got distressed at being downstairs alone (they used to sleep downstairs together) so he came up and slept on the bed. I now have 3 on the bed, we all sleep really well 😎..

Ours starts off in the kitchen and migrates to the bottom of the stairs during the night. I think I’m a strict dog mummy. I’ve never allowed any of our dogs upstairs.....(stair gate at the start, and after 6 months you can take it off and they don’t even try). I’ve trained all our dogs only to go on the sofa when I put their special blanket on the sofa. I love our dog to bits but I don’t want dog hairs and smell on all our furniture and clothes. I hate sitting in sofas that are shared with pets.

LilaButterfly · 06/05/2021 23:15

Mine sleep downstairs. DS and I have a mild dog hair allergy, so no dogs upstairs where we sleep.

Bigwave · 06/05/2021 23:16

puppy was with me for maybe 2 months then was fine in own crate in seperate room.

nicky2512 · 06/05/2021 23:27

What can I say?!

Floralnomad · 06/05/2021 23:46

Ours sleeps upstairs , he is currently on my bed watching TV with me but he goes in his own room at about midnight ,where he has a double bed , if adult son is home he shares with the dog .

kittenkipping · 07/05/2021 00:08

Mine sleeps upstairs after we had a kitchen fire. Thank god in one way that she was downstairs because she let us know what was happening quickly, but equally, our fire doors and fire safety upstairs mean that if it had escalated- we'd be fine but with insurance, but ddog? Not worth thinking about for me.

Dogmum40 · 07/05/2021 00:17

She starts off on our bed then gets down about 1-2am has a drink loudly (her bowl is next to my side of the bed) and then sleeps on the sofa my husband installed in our bedroom for her! I have absolutely no comment to make! I’m ashamed of him 🤣🙈

Evryoneisspecial · 07/05/2021 00:51

All my dogs have slept on my bed since I was child, and share the sofa in the daytime! Each to their own I guess. It’s probably better to have them in their own space but I like my dog to be with me so I don’t mind about that

In our kitchen diner. She still has a crate (door open) as I think she feels safe. (Rescue). Not allowed upstairs. I love her but she can be a bit smelly and sheds!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 07/05/2021 06:05

In the bed and has done from day one Wink

We've never had a single night time accident either as he woke us up to go out from the very beginning!

BeechTreeView · 07/05/2021 06:16

Starts in our bed, moves to a corner of the room, then another corner, then her bed, then our bed for a quick kiss on the lips to check we are awake, then grumbles when we get up in the morning that we are disturbing her beauty sleep.

Dh loves this as he is deep sleeper. The bags under my eyes are getting bigger.

SimonJT · 07/05/2021 06:24

Our dog has a crate in the livingroom, I slept in the livingroom for the first 2/3 weeks to settle him in, he has been a very good sleeper since day one, we have been very lucky with that.

He does tend to get in bed with us if anyone gets up in the night to go to the toilet.

Girlintheframe · 07/05/2021 06:41

Our dog slept in his crate next to our bed when he was a pup then we moved the crate out bit by bit.
Now he comes and lies on the bed until we got to sleep then sleeps in the office.
Would love him to sleep on the bed with us but suspect he would get too hot. I'm also quite a light sleeper so think neither of us would sleep well.

Astella22 That wee face!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/05/2021 06:58

Downstairs in the living room but not on the sofa. Dog1 is allowed up into our room on a Saturday night if she’s not too muddy and will sleep at the bottom of our bed. Dog 2 can be brought up on Sunday morning for a cuddle with us but the bedding is washed that day.

When we got dog1 we started with her in her crate in our bedroom. She spent a few nights next to the bed, then moved to the foot of the bed for a few nights. Then the landing for a few nights with our door open. Then the bottom of the stairs, then her spot in the living room. Dog2 just slept downstairs straight away as dog1 was there but he’s not bothered if dog1 gets a night upstairs, he still happily sleeps downstairs.

thecapitalsunited · 07/05/2021 07:22

My dog sleeps in the bedroom with us but not in the bed. I’ve noticed that I used to struggle to sleep when DH was away or if he stayed up when I’d gone to bed but the sound of sleepy breathing settles me right down and I don’t have anxious thoughts about burglars.

ilovesushi · 07/05/2021 09:18

Puppy happy in her pen in the kitchen at night, one cat on her cushion in the living room, the other cat snuggled on the bed.

XiCi · 07/05/2021 09:20

Pup has his own bed in our bedroom though usually wake up with him snuggled in on the bed Smile

Peace43 · 07/05/2021 10:00

On or under my bed!!

Inacountrygarden · 07/05/2021 10:12

My puppy is 10 weeks today and I am currently sleeping on the sofa in the living room which adjoins the kitchen where puppy is in his crate. For the first few nights I put his crate next to me in the living room.
As he is now sleeping 10-6 ish I am now considering moving back to my own bed upstairs. I don't want to miss hearing him cry and end up having an accident in the crate so I have just bought a camera type monitor which I am not entirely sure I trust just yet....

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 07/05/2021 10:22

Bedroom. On his own bed thankfully, and he’s never tried to get on the bed until the alarms go off in the morning. We have a separation anxiety ridden nightmare though so have never managed to break him out of the bedroom, unless it’s very hot when he will happily take himself off to sleep on the wooden floor in the hall downstairs Hmm Grin

0ntheg0again · 07/05/2021 10:22

Our one is 4 and started downstairs in a crate, when he was about 7 months he didn't like it anymore and moved upstairs. He has his own bed in the corner and splits his time depending on how we move around in the bed, so if we are sleeping nicely he's on the bed with us if we don't he moves down to his bed. In the summer he may choose the floor

CMOTDibbler · 07/05/2021 10:30

Ddog1 sleeps in bed with ds - its very cute, even now ds is a huge grumpy teenager who still cuddles under the duvet with his dog. Ddog2 sleeps in a crate in ds's room as he is anxious and apparently if he is in a crate at night the world is then our problem and he can relax. He comes and finds you to tell you he wants to go to bed and can you shut his door. Its not ideal having an XL crate in a bedroom, but it makes ddog2 happy and ds claimed that he couldn't be left out.
My foster puppies sleep in a crate downstairs, except for ones that won't in which case its in our bed for the super anxious ones, or more ideally eventually in a dog bed in the room. Its not so much I'm opposed to dogs in the bed, its just lurchers take up an awful lot of room as they like to sleep spread out!
