Dog in bedroom

nopenotplaying · 06/05/2021 22:42

We've sadly just lost our dog. We are due to pick up a puppy in a few weeks and are thinking about the sleeping arrangements. Our previous dog came to us at 1 year old, very nervous. The only way we could get him to settle was to sleep in our room.

Where does your dog sleep? Kitchen? Utility? Your own room? I'm not talking on our bed but in it's own bed in the corner. It will be a big dog 40kg ish when fully grown

Thanks

Pre oh I was dogs in bed beside me, had 3 at one point. When foster dog went my 2 ddogs were in beside me still and when I lost my first ddog youngest ddog and I shared the bed. But now oh is here she is in her crate at nighttime but still gets in for cuddles when he's at work Grin

He sleeps downstairs on the sofa, or on his bed. He's never been allowed upstairs, that's the cat's territory. Once he's settled he barely opens an eye when we go to bed.

Thanks all. I was really expecting many responses saying eww not in the bedroom! Our old dog did have his own bed and wasn't allowed on our bed. For context I'm talking a Doberman Grin I think I'll try the kitchen as I'm in a bungalow so it's not too far from our bedroom...but if that doesn't work out I'm not feeling half as odd about having him in our room now!

As a puppy she slept in the kitchen in her crate, then in a bed in the kitchen, then in her bed on the sofa once we go upstairs in the living room. But not upstairs. 1. We don't like dogs in the bedroom and 2. Once it's become a lifelong habit, it's cruel to suddenly shut an elderly dog downstairs when their joints make it unsafe. I'm not sure stairs are good for dogs anyway.

Besom · 07/05/2021 17:18

On the bottom of the bed. We had another big one who slept on his own bed but in the bedroom.

dudsville · 07/05/2021 17:20

We sleep as a pack here. We have a giant sofa in the bedroom that's for them and there are several corner hideaways. They migrate towards us near breakfast time. We don't need an alarm!

Blondiney · 07/05/2021 17:33

Two sleep IN the bed, as in under the duvet. The big one likes to spoon me. One chooses to sleep downstairs on her sofa but she races upstairs for cuddles in the morning. Smile

KurtWilde · 07/05/2021 17:41

I have 4 very large dogs and they sleep in the kitchen.

Chocolatefrenzy · 07/05/2021 18:13

My pooch (Labrador) sleeps on his dog bed in our bedroom, sometimes jumps on the bed during the night, but doesn’t usually disturb us

Ecci · 07/05/2021 19:22

One up, one down, their choice.

StillSmallVoice · 07/05/2021 21:42

On his own bed in our bedroom, just next to the toasty radiator. Retired greyhound. I gather it's unusual that after a year he's never been on the sofa or bed.Grin

pilates · 07/05/2021 23:00

as a young puppy downstairs. Once toilet trained, in our bedroom, sometimes on our bed and sometimes in his bed.

Derbee · 08/05/2021 01:19

Our puppy slept in a pen next to our bed, so I could reach down and pat him through the night. He’s NEVER cried. He now sleeps in a basket in our room (6 months old)

MadMadMadamMim · 08/05/2021 01:38

Downstairs. In various places. Sometimes he puts himself to bed in his crate (door is open). Sometimes he's snoring happily on the sofa in the boot room. Sometimes he's happily settled in his dog bed in the living room.

And occasionally, when I've gone down for a glass of water in the middle of the night, he's upside down with his legs in the air on the living room sofa. Which he knows perfectly well he's not allowed on.

I don't let him upstairs though. He's hairy and it's difficult enough keeping downstairs relatively dog-hair free.

Figgyboa · 08/05/2021 05:23

Both my dogs sleep in my bedroom

k1233 · 08/05/2021 05:41

Mine have their own beds in the bedroom. I was always strict about no dogs on the bed, but the westie is too adorable and I love him sneaking on when I'm asleep. Rolled over last night to find him sleeping like a person with his head on one of the pillows he's allowed to sleep on. Just about to get a new bed and am trying to figure out how he can get on and off - current bed is very low, new bed will be higher.

Ughmaybenot · 08/05/2021 05:45

On my bed 🤦🏼‍♀️ my poor mother, who was, and remains, a ‘dogs stay downstairs’ woman would be horrified Grin
He’s only a diddy little thing tho, (a mumsnst condemned cockapoo 🤫) and doesn’t moult. It would be a very different story else. All dogs I’ve ever had before have slept in their own beds, downstairs, in the utility.

Pumpkyumpkyumpkin · 08/05/2021 05:49

In her bed in our bedroom - wasn't the intention but when we brought her home from the rescue we tried downstairs and the landing and she was so unhappy we gave in.

Only problem is she has a built in 5am alarm so one of is up with her at that time every day as she pesters relentlessly until you do! My turn today hence being on here so early. The irony of it is once she's woken up a human and had a fuss, she likes to be wrapped in a blanket on the sofa so she can go back to sleep. Little sod is currently snoozing happily, I'm wide awake and knackered.

nopenotplaying · 08/05/2021 22:25

But what do you all do if you go on holiday? We haven't been for a few years so it's not been a problem but I'm thinking what would I do??? If he slept I. The bedroom he's be used to that constant closeness. If he was in the kitchen for example he may be more independent?

In the hall in his crate at the bottom of the stairs. He isn't allowed upstairs.

MondeoFan · 08/05/2021 22:34

Mine sleeps on the bottom of my bed. He is 11 though, it hasn't always been this way but as he's getting older I've been letting him as I know it makes him happy

Lollypop4 · 08/05/2021 22:36

I was strict, none of ours were allowed upstairs at all

Beamur · 08/05/2021 22:36

Mine sleeps in a basket downstairs. She's afraid to come upstairs (rescue)
No room on the bed though. Cats are there already!

hiredandsqueak · 08/05/2021 22:44

Bella came to us as a nine year old rescue. Nobody is allowed in my bedroom and I prefer that dogs stay downstairs. It took many weeks of disturbed nights or ridiculously early mornings before Bella got used to the idea though. Despite having a very comfortable dog bed she chooses to sleep on a specific cushion, that she claimed as hers when she got here, on the sofa.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/05/2021 22:45

All of my animals over the years dogs and cats have slept on my bed. i couldn't sleep properly without them.
