@ILikePizzaAndWine we slept right next to pup at that age so when they woke it woke us as we took him out. He quite quickly stopped needing to go between 11.30 and 5.30 ish. In fact we’ve only fully left him to sleep all night alone last night at 17 weeks! But then we haven’t had an accident in the house so I think it depends on what you want to do. I know some people use puppy pads so might have different suggestions!

@Hightideattheseaside glad you’ve enjoyed the recycling idea - we still love it! With the longline we have a 10m one. I gather it in as we get closer and let it out as he moves away. When it looks like he’s going to get to the end we try to recall - doesn’t always work though! Some days it seems to get caught under him more than others - I’ve just experimented with working out how slack or taut to have it where possible! Sometimes it’s just trailing behind him but means we’ve got better chance of catching him if we need to 🤣

Hightideattheseaside · 11/06/2021 08:22

@ILikePizzaAndWine my pup was about 12 weeks before she could go 10-5.30 without a wee. Yours is still young so can’t hold it all night. It’s up to you which method you use. I set an alarm and just moved it back by a few minutes each night which was a killer for a few weeks. But my son is a rubbish sleeper so I would often be awake anyway! Others appreciate their sleep more and use pads in the crate. But not sure how you wean them off pads. I’m sure others will.

ILikePizzaAndWine · 11/06/2021 09:33

Thank you both @MrsHerculePoirot and @Hightideattheseaside - I think she lulled us into a false sense of security with the first few nights! I'll start setting an alarm for about 5am and see how we get on, she's so so good (at the moment) I can't complain!

bettertimesareacoming · 11/06/2021 11:06

Hi everyone I'm so glad I found this thread ❤️ we are picking up our gorgeous male golden retriever tonight . I have managed to get everything sorted for him in the house but I'm still feeling really anxious . Is anyone else like me ? X

rnulanmoo · 11/06/2021 11:13

@familychallenge @LadyCatStark
Thank you! He's grown so much already.
So many beautiful puppy's on here 😍😍
@bettertimesareacoming aw how exciting! I think that's normal we've had our little pup a week today and I felt the same as you for the first few days still having moments now but feeling much better. Can't wait to see pics soon 🐶

LadyCatStark · 11/06/2021 12:42

@ILikePizzaAndWine we took Billy our for his last wee at 11pm and he was waking at 5am at 9 weeks. He’s 12 weeks today and from 11 weeks he’s managed from 11-7 😵. I think it coincided with him being able to go out for a walk and being really tired but also his bladder must have grown as it’s taking him longer to have a wee now. It’s a relief, I must say. 5am get ups do not suit me!

MonaChopsis · 11/06/2021 12:45

I've just signed MonaPup up for 'Generation Pup'... Dogs Trust and universities working together to create the biggest longitudinal study of dogs ever. For those of you with pups under 16 weeks, here is the link: generationpup.ac.uk/

MonaChopsis · 11/06/2021 12:47

And here is MonaPup definitely not eating anything she shouldn't be. It's just a sudden case of tongue jaundice.

MonaChopsis · 11/06/2021 12:51

MonaPup is 11 weeks old today and still up twice a night... She sleeps from 9pm through until 6.30am or so, but wakes up to piddle and/or poop at midnight and 4am,pretty much like clockwork. I think it just depends on the pup! It's all just a stage, it's all just a stage...

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/06/2021 14:12

Definitely stages! PoirotPup slept really well then went though a week of getting up for the day at 5/5.30 then just stopped again recently - probably to teach me a lesson for being inwardly smug about his all night sleeping 🤣🤣🤣

I would have signed up to that study but we’re just out of the age bracket!

Doje · 11/06/2021 15:05

@ashmts, how is your pup? Hoping she's on the mend.

Those with older pups (Dpup is almost 8 months now) when do you do your walks? I find I only get a couple of hours peace after a morning walk and so end up doing another about 2-3pm. Sometimes I'd like the second walk to be at dinner time, say 6pm ish, but I've already walked him because he's been a pain earlier in the afternoon!

I suppose I'm looking for comparisons, or ideas to stop DPup being a knob once he's 'recovered' from his first walk!

This is my 12 week old flat coated retriever, she was probably 10 weeks when the photo was taken.

Currently sleeping 10.30pm - 6.30 am

Posting another photo to show that she's not pot bellied (as she appears in previous picture)

Could you do three walks a day? Billy is not older so it might be different but I take him at 8:30am, 12pm and 6pm. Just for short walks though as he’s little.

ILikePizzaAndWine · 11/06/2021 18:24

Thank you so much for your feedback guys! I’m going to try an alarm, and see how that goes!

These pictures are a bit outing if anyone knows me on here, but I don’t care, I’m not very exciting as all my posts on here are about the pup 🤣

So many beautiful pups! I have just ordered a whole variety of ears, tails and bladder from JR. Absolutely cannot put a price on not being nibbled during dinner!

ashmts · 11/06/2021 19:06

@Doje She's okay thanks, she seems to be improving every day. She's still not her usual self at all, she's very tired all the time. We're getting more bursts of energy out of her the last day or two but she's sleeping a lot more than usual. I never thought I'd long for the days of a manic spaniel that won't settle. DP and I still haven't recovered, one of us has been with her constantly since it happened. We'll need to move back upstairs to sleep at some point but I'm scared to leave her

We're late risers and on days off we don't tend to walk pup till about 11am. I find she's quite chilled when we get up and willing to snuggle on the couch for an hour or two or chew some toys. She quite often doesn't even need a second walk depending on what we're doing that day. Sometimes we'll do a shorter walk after tea for lead training. But then on daycare days she's non-stop all day and gets two or three walks so I think we're lucky she adapts to our routine.

legosnowqueen · 11/06/2021 20:24

@Doje Legopup is almost 9 months old. He now has 3 walks a day - very short walk first thing (7am) then a longer walk at about 12.30 before lunch (but can flex to earlier or later) & an evening walk for 30 mins at some time between 6 & 8pm, the later time on hotter days. I asked the vet if it was okay to do 3 walks & because the first one is literally round the block for toiletting she said yes.

rnulanmoo · 11/06/2021 21:35

Advice please puppy parents!
MooPup is nearly 9 weeks old occasionally when we pick him up he growls.. this is our first puppy so I am concerned is he being aggressive? Can they be aggressive at this age?
We've had him a week and he's not even barked yet so don't know if this growl is him finding his voice. Opinions please anyone? x

Turquoisesol · 11/06/2021 21:56

Turquoisepup does a sort of grumble when we pick her up. It’s more of a “grump I don’t like this” sort of noise. Rather than a growl. Could that be what you are hearing? I have no idea if a 9 week old could actually be aggressive, it seems quite unlikely ?

tabulahrasa · 11/06/2021 22:00

Lots of dogs growl when you pick them up tbh... it’s something you have to train them to be ok with.

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/06/2021 22:34

@Doje PoirotPup is only 17 weeks so we’re only just on two walks of 20 mins - although if there is lots of sniffing it takes longer! I was thinking we’d start doing three sometimes about 6 months - so maybe you could do a third walk. They don’t have to be long - just sniffy maybe in this weather particularly? It might help?

@ilovesushi honestly JR snacks have saved our meal times and DHs work calls and a meal at the pub 🤣

bettertimesareacoming · 12/06/2021 02:16

This is my new pup ❤️ it's like having a new born baby lol I am down stairs sleeping with him and have managed 1 hours sleep . Also showered him half hour ago because he started rolling in his own pee 😂

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/06/2021 06:55

Morning.
How old do pups need to be to eat these jr chews? AwesomePup is 10 weeks now and is a bugger for jumping on us (dd2 mostly as she's the easiest target) at mealtimes. We're trying to distract him with a Kong or a lickimat, but they don't take him long enough for us to finish eating. He's got a yak chew, but that's not exciting enough to hold his attention.

Better he's adorable!!! What breed is he? You're exactly right about it being like having a newborn, I think I'm getting less sleep with the puppy than I got with either of my actual babies though. It's a good job he's cute or I'd be thinking about sending him back, lol.

ILikePizzaAndWine · 12/06/2021 07:37

Pup has found her feet and was awful between 8pm - 10.30pm and has had a mad half hour and I’ve just got her chilled out.

She’s like a totally different dog when she’s on one 🤣 Somebody asked me her name on FB when I posted a picture and Said ‘usually it’s PizzaPup but this morning it’s been ‘alright, calm down knob head’ 🤣
