Sleeping arrangements

We have a current dog who sleeps on our bed. When we had our old dog they slept downstairs together but when she died (4 years ago) he came upstairs to sleep and never when back down! Puppy is due to arrive next week and while we are happy to have 2 on the bed, I am not sure What to do until it is toilet trained. We will crate (downstairs) when we are out but should we do that at night upstairs as well? Thanks

make a den by the side of your bed, when dpup needs to go out you will hear him/her move.

Or, you could sleep downstairs with the pup and let the older dog decide whether to be with you or upstairs on the comfy bed 😉

I would choose whichever option gives YOU the best sleep (while accepting that it will be interrupted for a good few weeks) For me that was sleeping on a blow up downstairs, where an accident was not such a big issue as on the bedroom carpet. Though I have to say that the one pup I did have in a den next to the bed NEVER soiled the carpet, she always whined to go downstairs. She was, however, the best dog EVER, long gone but never forgotten 🙂.

We crate trained puppy from day one with Ddog sleeping as normal upstairs. I did a mix of sleeping downstairs and upstairs which worked well with lots of late night toilet visits and very early mornings.

By 6 months we crept upstairs after the 5am toilet break. Pup is nearly a year old now and firmly on the end of the bed or snuggled up on my Oodie by my side if the bed. (I don't wear my Oodie anymore as it's a dogs bed now) Grin

Crate training pup is probably a good idea as at least then the older dog will get a break from puppyish behavior.
If you have the crate next to your bed pup will be able to smell/see you and older dog which should be comforting.

It might be worth seeing what the dog's like in terms of stomach upsets too. I'm currently very glad sleeps in the kitchen with a tiled floor as she grazes on her walks and currently has diarrhoea thanks to literally eating shit 🤢
