Kennel cough advice

I suspect DDog has KC for the first time and have been Googling but can’t find out if the cough would be constant? Or very regular at least? He had a couple of short episodes last night of coughing and acting like he had something stuck that he needed to bring up. Another 10 min episode this morning at about 7am then nothing at all since.

Can this still be KC? It is going around in our area hence the suspicion but I’m not totally sure!

Bump. Especially as I haven’t heard him cough since this morning!

The only dogs I know who had KC have a very distinctive cough. Can't really describe it but it is very different to when my dog 'hacks' because he has been eating crap and seems to want to clear his throat.

It’s a “honking” cough. Not much you can do about it really, it will go away in the next few days. An occupational hazard. Check if your kennel supports the use of KC vaccine (not all do, many actively against) and then chat with the vet

Thank you! Hmmm. It was a honking cough but he’s not done it since 7am and I kind of assumed if it was KC he’d have been coughing more regularly. He’s vaccinated but I know it doesn’t protect against all strains. A couple of dogs at his daycare had it last week so I’m keeping him home anyway!

Mine seems susceptible to KC , he has the vaccine but still gets it mildly quite often and it’s often quite intermittent coughing . I give him baby tixylix , he loves it so it could be he’s just perfected the cough to get the medicine .

Hi. Mine only coughed occasionally but sounded like she'd smoked fifty a day. She was lethargic for a few days then fine with just an occasional cough. I gave her honey mixed with goats yoghurt. She got better after about a week.

Thank you so much! Yep my boy sounds like a heavy smoker when he goes for it. @Floralnomad love that yours has worked out how to get the good stuff!

Just back from the vets with mine - even though she has been vaccinated there is an impervious strain doing the rounds and the vet says that she has seen loads of cases in the past fortnight. It sounds a bit like when my youngest had whooping cough. Suspected it was KC but just wanted to check it wasn't something lodged in her throat since she sounded like she was trying to cough something up. Definitely not coughing 24/7 - it comes in fits and starts. The vet recommended a teaspoon of honey from time to time which is going down a treat!

As a PP has said, KC cough is not like a usual one. It's more like a seal barking, it isn't usually continuous and often results in a small quantity of white foam being retched up. Often the dog will have a small drop of white discharge in the inner corner of his eyes and the whites may be pinkish.

My dd of got it once ( he had been vaccinated) it sounded like a seal.
