@DDIJ

I knew a bearded collie owner in the 1980s whose walks were punctuated by people making comments about him buying an old english sheepdog due to a paint advert. OES owners would have had it much worse and this would explain why the breed has fallen out of popularity.
Yes, they were known as Dulux dogs. I don't see any issue with this, though?
SaintReatham · 19/04/2021 22:26

The KC is apparently a bit behind with registrations from last year, so it might not be quite as bad as that.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 19/04/2021 22:29

Also worth bearing in mind that many of these breeds have populations abroad

We had a bearded Collie when I was a teenager. They don't make great family dogs- still too much ' sheepdog' in them I am told. Ours was neurotic and really only responded to my dad.

chaosrabbitland · 19/04/2021 22:35

@Stellaris22

Didn't realise bloodhound was on there. I have a basset and would love a bloodhound as well, I met one a few years ago and they're beautiful dogs.

I'd also love a basset bleu de gascogne but there are very few breeders outside of France. Not native I know.

we had a basset hound when i was a kid , i remember him well and he was so lovely , i still see a couple that have one around town and another lady had 2 she walks , i always stop to fuss them and they slobber all over me bless them , it makes me sad but not surprised to see bloodhounds on this list as i cant bloody remember the last time i saw one , , well apart from on crime and investigation i mean . if it was possible for me to have a dog id love a bloodhound too . i even love hearing them sing on youtube vids . so many really of these lovely breeds all gradually becoming less and less , to be overtaken by endless staffies and labradoodles , not that theres anything wrong with those dogs , its just a shame more tradional breeds seem to be dying out

“I’m staggered the King Charles spaniel is on that list. Presumably only reflects KC registered litters?”

“Surprised corgi is on there”

I suspect you’re both thinking of different dogs Smile

Cavalier King Charles spaniels and Pembroke corgis aren’t rare, especially cavs, but kind Charles spaniels and cardigan corgis are different dogs.

Rockpipit · 19/04/2021 23:44

Sad to see the bearded collie on the list. I hope to have another beardie one day.

PickAChew · 19/04/2021 23:52

My parents had an Irish Red and white setter. He was the first one I'd ever seen and I've only seen one since.

HerMammy · 20/04/2021 00:45

@PickAChew
There’s two red setters near me (separate owners) I was surprised to see them as I hadn’t seen one in years, gorgeous dogs.

SallySycamore · 20/04/2021 01:06

A friend has had Norwich and Norfolk terriers. I'm surprised they're on the lists — they're lovely little dogs.

I was thinking of the King Charles mainly because DH had one as a child so I’d assumed they were still popular - I wonder what’s behind their demise.
PitchImperfect · 20/04/2021 02:16

I'm now obsessed with Glen of Imaal terriers. I'd never even heard of them before today but they're adorable & I need one. DH keeps saying sensible things like "we have 3 young children & not enough time as it is" & "we can't afford it." Given that they're so rare, maybe I can convince him that it's a charitable thing... He can't argue with charity, right?! Grin

Cheeryblossom1 · 20/04/2021 06:37

PitchImperct, if we ever move to the country I'll have the same argument for the old english sheepdogs 😂
When I was a child I had a dog breed book which I used read everyday☺️ I used to particularly want either a Wheaten Terrier or a Skye terrier, sad to see them on the list...

That's why the list for 2020 came out a good month later than it usually does.

Yes, it really is that bad - look at the trend as well as this years figures.

listershologram · 20/04/2021 06:43

We had one when I was growing up, everybody in our village knew him but I don't think I've seen one since.

twinkletoesimnot · 20/04/2021 06:49

Someone I know has a sheepadoodle Hmm so they are even crossing these with poodles now. Probably doesn't help the numbers.

He is lovely though.

HelenHywater · 20/04/2021 07:00

I met a sheepadoodle called Ralph last week @twinkletoesimnot is it the same one? So cute. Huge.

I'm really sad at this news. I always always wanted an Old English Sheepdog.

tabulahrasa · 20/04/2021 07:20

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

We had one for a year or so when I was a teenager - because he was old when we acquired him, not just randomly, lol.

He’s the only one I’ve ever met.

twinkletoesimnot · 20/04/2021 18:09

Hi @HelenHywater

No, this one is called Jeff! 😂

Dutchess1995 · 20/04/2021 18:46

Here's my Old English Sheepdog Smile
I think there are less around now due to their size and the thought of the grooming. Many owners Clip their coats but for me the coat is what makes them special.
I don't spend more than 10m every few days giving him a brush simply because he doesn't like it but he does go to the groomers every 10 weeks which is an added cost.
But he's worth it as he's very loyal if a tad vocal and a nightmare with other dogs as he just wants to jump all over them to play but I'd have another if I could find oneGrin

Ladymouse

No, I have Skye Terriers. Only 27 registered in 2020, second only to the Otterhound on the At Risk list.
Some of mine

@Moondust001

It may feel sad to consider a dog breed of this sort may disappear - it all depends on your point of view, as many "breeds" are so inbred as to carry traits of many health problems. But I also think people need to be aware that the concept of "dog breed" is rather tainted too - the Old English only really appeared in the mid to late 1800's. so it is a little over 100 - 170 or so years old. A manufactured dog breed doesn't become extinct - not like elephants become extinct. There will always be dogs as long as there are humans, if not longer. Breeds are artificial and largely the result of human intervention, and often not for their own good. Dogs are in no danger of becoming extinct. Some breeds, on the other hand, probably should be permitted to lapse, given the damage we have done with our selective breeding of them.
I agree with this so much.
TheFnozwhowasmirage · 20/04/2021 21:00

The last OES I saw was in the 1970's. He lived opposite our farm and we were warned to keep away from him as he was nasty.
We have a bloodhound pack come across our land fairly regularly,lovely dogs,very friendly,you can hear them baying from miles away.The sound makes my blood run cold for some reason though.
I'm surprised to see smooth collies on there,I see a lot of them,but only workers. Perhaps they aren't as popular pets as Border collies are?

XelaM · 20/04/2021 23:52

@Darklane how gorgeous are they!!! Do you show? They look so well-groomed
