Sleeping on the bed

Puppy 11months has slept beautifully and happily in his crate all night from day one In the kitchen and I let him out about 7 am. I know how lucky I am in that. Since he was house trained at three months or so he has has the full run of the house during the day. So right now he’s fast asleep (or pretending to be) on my bed. Im upstairs, knackered and want to go to bed. I can’t be bothered to wake him up and encourage him down two flights of stairs to lock him in his crate and so I am thinking of letting him stay where he is. Is this a HUGE mistake and he will never get in his crate again?

In my dreams my girl is back and on my bed.

Someone’s mistake can also be the gateway to joy 😊

Are you single?
If me and DH got divorced i’d definitely have the dogs in the bed.
But not while having a partner, I can’t imagine having to turf out the comfy, sleeping dog every time I fancied a shag!

Thankyou all. I will relax about it then and enjoy the warm weight on my feet.

You do know thats it now, he will be sleeping in your bed from now on. Our dog was a rescue at 6 months. We have another dog that used to sleep on the bed but would jump off if we figeted. He sleeps in his basket in our room. The rescue on the other hand literally jumped between us, refused to move and has slept there ever since. Sometimes he sleeps under the covers. HE WILL NOT MOVE!! Like we try and budge him and he just makes like a rock. For some reason we put up with this, we laugh like proud parents and he stays right there - no matter what. God I love that dog

Anordinarymum · 18/04/2021 22:55

I love my dog. She gets on my bed at every available opportunity but when it comes to me wanting to sleep she gets off and goes in her own bed. No way will I fight for space or covers which is what happens if she stays on the bed.
My bed not hers even though I adore her.

PollyRoulson · 19/04/2021 08:47

Dogs will never ever sleep on my bed or in my room! For so many reasons.

If you dont want her on you bed do not let her on it once. If you dont mind her being on your bed then fine.

landofgiants · 19/04/2021 10:31

No dogs in my bedroom or bed either. Each to their own. Only let her sleep in your bed if you're sure you want her there.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 19/04/2021 10:37

My dog doesn't go in my bedroom let alone my bed but if you let the dog on the bed once then be prepared to do it forever.

We have greyhounds and it's only the very keenest greyhound owner who will even try keeping them off sofas and beds - BUT! one of the first things we teach is "OFF!" and, on Day 1 we establish that we reserve the right to tip them off the sofa/bed/whatever at any time. (They do have their own beds). That's the important thing - that they can be removed at any time.

My girl is nine months, she sleeps sometimes in her crate, sometimes on my bed. She obviously prefers my bed although I think she gets a more restful night in the crate. She never complains either way

Butterflyfox · 19/04/2021 19:36

Dozy - that would be ideal to have both options but I suspect I won’t be able to go back. He was terribly happy last night (and both disbelieving and slightly smug too I think)

Ours has her bed in our bedroom. We tried downstairs sleeping when she was a puppy but grumpy neighbour complained about the noise.

It's quite nice having her in the room. She sleeps in her bed all night, but sneakily gets on our bed at around 5am. She gets up on DH side because she knows I'm more strict!

I just made sure to get the 'off' command sorted.

Could you put a bed in your bedroom?
