11 week old Labrador puppy seems constantly ravenous.

Hi this is my second post about our new family member. Proofpup is constantly hungry. I am feeding him kibble about 220g per day over 4 meals. I use the food as treats too.
He also has a frozen carrot and 3 or 4 apple chunks ( about half an apple) every day.

He is never satisfied. He knows if he does a wee or poo in the garden he gets a treat, and now I am sure he is deliberately weeing to get treats. He did 8 little wees in a 40 minutes period this afternoon and came straight over to me each time looking for the treat. He is adorable.

I only use his food allowance as treats otherwise he would be having about 20 treats a day for all his outdoor wees and poos.

I am worried I am not feeding him enough. I am following the guidelines on the food packaging but when I look online advice varies from 180g to over 300g a day.

Being a first time lab owner, I was wondering if this constant search for food was normal. I feel sorry for Proofpup as he never seems satisfied after his meal.

Thanks for any advice.

And he does downward dog excellently! What a cutie!

Welcome to the world of a stomach on legs. 🦮👨‍🍳

Operasinger · 16/04/2021 19:39

He’s gorgeous, by the way.

My 2 like carrots, broccoli, green beans, apples. 1 lab gets very offended if you show her a mushroom.

Socks and pants never leave them about. The amount of times I've picked up poop socks and pants.

1 lab even had the nerve to pinch a tortila wrap, bring it in to show is. As I went to get it, he had inhaled it licking his lips.

FloralJammies · 16/04/2021 19:42

My lab is broken! He’s the fussiest eater I’ve ever known...

My labs in the past however - complete buckets!

Saucery · 16/04/2021 19:48

Oh, he is stunning! ❤️❤️

I came in to say the same as Pangolin - that many of them are missing the sated gene so are permanently hungry. Hence why there are so many obese Labradors about. Feed him so he’s a fit, healthy weight and ignore the begging. Whatever you do, never feed him from the table/let anyone else do this, as he will never forget and will be the most annoying dog ever at mealtimes.

FeatheredHope · 16/04/2021 19:52

Yep! You have a lab ;)

I know it’s not a lab, but any excuse to post my favourite video of an utter fail at obedience ;)

@PangolinPenguin

Apparantly at least a quarter of labs have a genetic mutation that means they are never able to feel full/are always hungry. Quite sad really and I hope it’s possible to breed the gene out of them someday.
This. It's recognised in veterinary that labs have a genetic issue that makes them endlessly greedy and hungry. Feeding them food with almost no carbs helps immensely.
ProofBy1nduction · 16/04/2021 19:58

Thanks again for all the wise words. It is very reassuring and I'm loving the new lab world I have joined.

Vodka - your labs are beautiful!!!

It never fails to make me laugh

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/04/2021 20:01

Yep. Labs are always hungry.

Dog1 (not a lab) is just having some painkillers due to a ripped claw. Lab is sat looking at the pain killers syringe and drooling. For medicine.

You need to start rewarding with praise, a fuss and a quick play but they will always be food driven. It does have its uses. We have the ‘magic biscuit tin’, as soon as the lab hears the biscuit tin open, he runs and jumps onto his bed. Even when he’s down the bottom of the garden and not listening to us.

Here's my cheer-up clip. Grin

Tricolor123 · 16/04/2021 20:05

Yup that is a lab! My colleague used to work for a rescue and they took on a lab that was rescued. This lab weighed 60kg!! The owner sadly had Alzheimer’s and could never remember if he fed the dog but the dog always looked hungry so he was constantly fed.

Just make sure your pup has a nice indent in the waist when he’s stood and you look down his back and make sure you can feel his ribs but not see them. That’s a good guide for their weight.

ProofBy1nduction · 16/04/2021 20:15

Featheredhope that clip is brilliant!!
I can't open the link you sent Jesus but I'll try my laptop.

I will definitely be strict with his intake and watch his waist!

Purina is full of fillers. You could try a 'heavier' kibble like Wolfworthy. If it is any consolation my rough collie is an absolute gannet. I am trying to drop the fourth feed but her body clock is exactly timed to eight o clock!

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/04/2021 20:20

I can't even have a cup of tea without a dog wanting 1. Always end up giving them 1/2 a cup each, or they wont leave me alone.

ArnottsUnderpass · 16/04/2021 20:20

They're absolute buggers. Hoover on 4 legs.

I mean they provide endless entertainment but they will seemingly eat anything (I give you used peppermint teabags, minty fresh breath 🤣 dried crispy hen poo....you name it, the lab ate it) and yet they STILL look at you with the "poor starving wee doggy who nobody has fed ALL DAY.

LostArcher · 16/04/2021 20:20

I also use a bit of goats yoghurt for her las5 feed because dairy makes you feel fuller. Honestly, she's been at day care today so is shattered. I gave her more raw for her 5.00 pm feed thinking that she might forget the eight o clock kibble handful. Nope. She's just done the mad kibble dance and done the whole 'Lassie, there is a little kid down a well routine' to usher me into the kitchen!

It's an assistance dog in training - well worth a watch Grin

This has reminded me of going camping with friends and their lab. DD aged about 2 went off and did a poo in her potty in our tent without telling us. I only found out when I went to investigate a wagging tail sticking out of our tent doorway Shock

13 years later the lab is still going strong and we have one of our own now too. Ours is pretty greedy but has never managed to eat human faeces, thankfully
