Until this afternoon I have never in his 2 years with us heard him howl. Today he got a new squeaky ball which he has been chasing across the floor with all day. So he chases it for a bit with lots of irritating squeaking then stops and howls at it? What on earth is going through his mind? I presume he wouldn't be chasing it if he wasn't having fun? He has had squeaky toys before but none have ever elicited this reaction from him.
