Dog being sick in the morning

When my dog was a puppy he was sick sometimes in the morning. I started to give him a couple of biscuits before bed, and that stopped it from happening. During the last 3 weeks he has been sick 3/4 times in the morning. Nothing much just bile. It always happens when he needs a poo. He doesn’t have any other signs of an upset stomach, and he is always keen to have his breakfast afterwards.
Does anyone else’s dog do this? Should I be giving him something more substantial at bedtime? Perhaps split up his daily food ration into smaller portions?

If it is a regular occurence I would speak to your vet.

It may be solved by changing how he is fed but the vet would be able to help with that decision.

When this happens to mine it's usually just because then are hungry. They only get fed wet meat once a day and Althea least have biscuits down refuse and on those days they are usually sick the morning after z

My elderly dog did this regularly. I had to try and get some food in him first thing. It would settle his stomach. Vet did give me some antacid but it wasn't as effective as food.

We give dry biscuits just before we go to sleep and he gets a pre breakfast treat in the morning when we are lounging about. Mine isn't sick but he lip smacks as he seems to have some kind of acid reflux.

Exactly the same has happened to my pup, about 3 times over the last 3 weeks and only in the morning. I think its hunger vomit so am going to give some dog biscuits before bed and see if it stops

Bile is generally a sign of hunger.

When is the last meal-time? Mine has his last meal fairly early but he gets a snack of some veggies and chicken around 7-8pm which tides him over until morning.

Sunflowers, his last meal is at 5pm. I give him a couple of dog biscuits before bed. I guess it is not enough for him. I will try giving him a more substantial snack before bed.

@BiteyShark, I’m going to keep a pot of biscuits beside my bed ready to give one to him if we sleep in. 👍🏻

My pup does this sometimes, just yellow bile.

I also feed her quite early (around half 5), and I notice it's the mornings I get up later she does it.

I will start giving her a snack just before bed

@tabulahrasa, he is ready for his food by 5pm. He starts pacing about and stares at me! Grin I could try pushing it back by 15 minutes every other day to get it to 6pm.

Well yeah, dogs get used to routines, lol

But I’d move it much later tbh, I try and space meals out about evenly. My last foster was doing that bile on an empty stomach thing, I ended up adding a sort of small lunch and giving him his dinner at about 9 or 10. It definitely made a difference.

I agree with other posters. My dog now has his breakfast (kibble) at 9 ish, then his tea around 4.30 (kibble + cooked veg). Then he has a good handful of his kibble just before bed around 10. He can't cope with big meals anyway so I just split it into 2 but save a handful of it for bedtime.

If still on 4 meals it’s worth pushing last meal back to later 9-9ish. My puppy did this in a regular basis and now he has a run around before breakfast . I take him for a walk and let him run around in the garden. He has his breakfast and it settles. Has worked a treat. Before he was allowed out, I’d run around in the garden with a ball. Very rare he’s sick now

Just got to find what's right for your dog, my dogs would gave eaten my arm off if I fed them at 9!! (Besides that I'd be at work!)
