Dog will only walk on grass

I'm at my wits end with my 5 year old pug. We used to go out for daily walks for an hour walking the streets, fields, nature walks etc. But now he walks at a snails pace on the pavement and sometimes sits down and refuses to walk. He’s not overweight.

We have a small field at the back of our house and he quite happily runs and walks all over the field. The problem with walking seems to only be on the pavements. This has made our daily walk stressful, as he just won’t walk. I’ve been taking him on the field most days now, but I’m worried that without a proper walk on the pavement he will gain weight and make it much more difficult. Plus, worried the field will get boring for him. I no longer drive, so can’t drive further afield for other fields to roam.

Has anybody got advice as to how to get him walking more on the pavement? Thanks

Has he seen a vet? It occurs to me that pavement is a harder surface than grass so may be causing some pain (or making existing pain worse)?

Could he have had a scare from a hot pavement? He may just not trust them anymore.
I'd be inclined to sit with him on the grass, laying treats on the tarmac at ever increasing distances. Let him snuffle about to find them. Hopefully he'll forget he's on tarmac and just wander around looking for them.

Sounds like his feet hurt on the hard surface, I would get a vet check out his feet and legs just to check there is nothing physical going on. Do you have any hard surfaces in your house? How is he with them?

Thanks all, we have a vets appointment for next Wednesday, hoping all is fine. He’s ok on the wooden floors in our house, it’s just the pavement he won’t walk on

When was the last time he got his nails clipped?

Mamazita · 08/04/2021 16:35

He last had them clipped 3 weeks ago

Did the nail clipping/refusal to walk on pavements coincide?

I wonder if they cut the nails a bit short and so they're a bit painful for him.
