Does anyone not have a dog bed, and their dog just sleep on the sofa or floor?

I bought a lovely dog bed for my now 10 month old GR - he had a crate as well, lovingly decked out. When it was really cold I was worried about him being in our kitchen so from then he has slept in our bedroom - I made a super little duvet bed for him - he has used none of it and prefers to sleep on the floor or a chair! I haven’t bothered buying a bigger dog bed or crate!

PuppyFeet · 05/04/2021 07:32

He did have one and he ate it! So now he has a piece of vet bed on the bottom of his crate.

When he gets older I may try him with another bed!

DinosaurDiana · 05/04/2021 07:35

My dog doesn’t sleep in her bed, she sleeps on my bed. But she will occasionally go and sit in it. I think it’s right that they have their own place that they can go to if feeling ill etc.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 05/04/2021 07:42

Dogs need somewhere they can go and not be disturbed - their own little corner. DDog spends most of his time on my bed or the sofa, but clearly appreciates having the option of going to one of his beds (under my bed / in the lounge).

LolaSmiles · 05/04/2021 09:27

For us, it's important they know they have their space they can go to get away from it all and not be disturbed. We use everything from a crate, to dog bed, to a duvet on the floor with ours, as long as they have their little space to get away.

fairydustandpixies · 05/04/2021 09:50

Ddog has two beds, one in my bedroom and one in the lounge. He always heads straight for whichever bed then sits looking at me waiting for the inevitable invite to sleep on my bed with me or sit on my lap the settee.

Sparkle79 · 06/04/2021 07:25

@DinosaurDiana @AvocadosBeforeMortgages @LolaSmiles that's a really good point actually, I hadn't thought about them having their own space.

(as he just sleeps wherever, usually cold kitchen floor, even though he has a perfectly comfy bed)

Ours doesn't have a bed - he just sleeps where he likes.

The 'own space' is a good point but, we're a adult household and so the dog gets left alone unless he solicits fuss/attention - which pretty much makes the whole house he own space Grin

Sitdowncupoftea · 06/04/2021 15:06

I don't use a dog bed my dogs never use them. I put throws on my sofa sometimes they sleep there otherwise on the floor. I've never used a crate I don't like caging dogs. Dogs will find there own spot.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/04/2021 22:49

We haven't got a dog bed, well actually we have but I ended up sticking it in the loft! My dog never ever slept on it and looked really depressed if I encouraged him to go on it!!

He sleeps wherever he likes 🤷‍♀️ I have a small sheepskin rug in my bedroom which he has claimed for his own most nights.

Nettleskeins · 06/04/2021 22:53

Mine loves his bed...quite a big wide one for a 10kg poodle...he likes to stretch out on it, and he gets very cross if another dog tries to nab it. But really his favourite daytime retreat is a "quiet" sofa.
He sleeps in his bed at night, on the sofa Wink best of both worlds. The floor is for occasional use in the daytime, sans bed..

Nettleskeins · 06/04/2021 22:58

I put a special woolly blanket in his bed, which is easier to wash than the whole bed, but wool not polyester or acrylic as it is naturally deoderising and absorbs moisture if he is ever muddy, a bit wet from grass, then I can shake it out and dry it. He loves to roll on this blanket or the blanket on the sofa or a carpet

LoveFall · 06/04/2021 23:07

Our dog has two beds, one in the living room and one I have tried to get him to sleep in on the foot of our bed.

He uses the living room bed to hide his chew sticks. All around the edge and even underneath. He will spend ages getting then hidden just right.

If a lap is not available he will sleep in the chew stick bed.

The bed on our bed was a complete failure. He waits until we are asleep, then creeps up the bed to sleep right alongside my pillow. Every morning I wake up with him there and an empty cold dog bed. I have given up and now just put a blanket down for him.

The little sneak. He is lucky he is small and cute and I love him.

Floralnomad · 07/04/2021 00:31

Our dog has beds in both our lounges which he does use , he also sleeps on the sofas and at night sleeps upstairs in a double bed .

Sparkle79 · 07/04/2021 08:15

@LoveFall that made me laugh about hiding the chew!

Thinking about it, we have 3 rooms downstairs (he's not allowed upstairs) and we're only ever using 1 or 2 at the same time, so if he needs some space he can take himself off to an empty room (which he does sometimes). He sleeps on the sofa at nighttime and never goes in his bed, so thinking we will just ditch it completely. He just wants to drag it around and hump it and then chews it and gets fluff everywhere Confused
