Do dogs know it's a bank holiday?

I am sure mine must know and decide to injure himself when you can't see your own vet because they are closed. We even had to do xmas day at the vets one year.

Just waiting for a video consult from an emergency vet Sad

Offering a friendly paw!

I hope it proves not serious

And yes of course they know. It's the same instinct that means they only vomit on the most expensive rug, and lie at the feet of the guest who likes dogs the least

Spudlet · 04/04/2021 08:17

Remembering the time that Spuddog ate his way through the entire contents of the bin on the eve of a bank holiday, necessitating surgery and a three day hospital stay at the most expensive vets in town as they were the ones on the rota for that weekend - yes. They know. Thank goodness for insurance - it was a four figure bill 😱 13 or so years down the line, Spuddog continues to thrive and has learnt absolutely nothing whatsoever from the experience 🙄

Hope it’s nothing too serious and that both your dog and your bank balance make a full and speedy recovery!

Cats also.

Bank holiday. I was sitting at my computer and my cat uncharacteristically had a wee on a newspaper next to my desk. There was blood in it. So I googled and we were at the emergency vet within the hour. Fortunately it was only cystitis.

Hope your pup is okay and not too expensive Smile

minmooch · 04/04/2021 08:38

Always. Christmas Eve my pets like to go down with a serious illness.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 04/04/2021 08:55

Oh no Sad what's happened to BiteyDog?

HappydaysArehere · 04/04/2021 09:50

Dogs and children. They are the same! Hope your little one gets fixed without too much trouble.

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 10:33

Just back from been seen at the vets as they wanted to check him over after the video consultation.

He has injured his back. Was in pain after the walk yesterday and wouldn't jump out the car and was still really stiff today. He had been prescribed pain/anti inflammatory meds and rest and back to our usual vets next week.

Just about to put in the insurance claim 😁

At one time we were convinced that our house knew it was Boxing Day, because that was always the day the patio door would jam open, the toilet would stop flushing, there'd be a leak under the sink, the knob would come off the cooker...

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 10:50

I am totally sure they know. Thank god for insurance Grin

Aww no @BiteyShark, I hope bitey dog is better soon.

Floralnomad · 04/04/2021 11:09

My sisters dog is like this , she’s also nearly 20 and uninsured , last May BH she spent the night at the local OOH vets for £1100 , she generally goes for the Sunday night though . Hope Biteydog gets well soon .

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 11:18

Some of the emergency bills make your eyes water.

We were just under £300 so not too bad this time and couldn't fault the video consultation or in person vets. Covid makes it harder as everything over the phone and BiteyDog is terrified of the vets especially when he has to go in without us but still very efficient.

The injections have knocked him out as he was all wobbly and now crashed out asleep.

The longer term worry is that it is related to a previous back injury and is a spinal disc issue rather than a muscular one but will cross that bridge later if it doesn't improve.

Boxing Day was ddogs best one - acute pancreatitis, £1800...

Hope your furry one is ok!

Floralnomad · 04/04/2021 12:56

We are lucky as our OOH is the local PDSA hospital , so although we pay full price the staff are absolutely fantastic and they are open all day as well so you don’t have to move animals back and forwards which you do at some overnight vets .

sunflowersandbuttercups · 04/04/2021 13:01

Hope BiteyDog gets better soon 💜

HappyThursdays · 04/04/2021 13:06

Poor bitey! Hope he's feeling better soon and it isn't related to his back injury

@BiteyShark I meant to ask you how you keep him groomed? Happy has a fairly short coat but his paws definitely need keeping on top of. Was thinking of making sure his feet/bum/Willy are all done but for now, his coat barely needs a trim/stripping or am I making a rod for my own back by not doing it all at the same time.

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 13:33

Thanks for all the good wishes. Spaniels always look sad but I think I have the saddest looking one today. He is clearly doped up but now trying to fight sleep.

We have always had him clipped short since a puppy. I know it's meant to affect their coat but it's so easy to maintain and keep clean when short and you don't get as many twigs stuck in it. He goes every 4-6 weeks and even if we don't have much or any taken off his back he always has his paws, legs and bum trimmed short.

Thanks x

I hope he gets some rest now. It's awful when they are in pain but fighting sleep x

SpiceRat · 04/04/2021 14:05

Not DDog but Guinea Pigs always end up getting bloat on a weekend / bank holiday which means extortionate emergency vet fees and 50% of the time the bumpy car ride has deflated them so it’s “precautionary” treatment. Furry little shits.

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 16:24

I have heard from rabbit owners that often stasis tends to occur at weekends.

Just a shame we couldn't see our usual vets as we are a frequent flyer so they know all of our history. He is still in so much pain, bunny hoping when he gets up and struggling to get food into him.

He turned down hand fed chicken Shock. I know he masks pain so when he shows it he must be hurting. Getting him to eat food tomorrow covered in pain killer will be fun Sad

HappyThursdays · 04/04/2021 18:23

Oh no poor boy. When can you get in to see your vet?

BiteyShark · 04/04/2021 18:32

We have pain killers to give him every day with the last dose on Thursday morning but my usual vet is open from Tuesday so will phone then and get him booked in.

He really isn't himself which is odd as he has had awful neurological symptoms in the past and been running about like there is nothing wrong. This time he just doesn't want to move and stares at us but I wonder if it's the drugs.

How was his night Bitey?

Corncorncorn · 05/04/2021 09:03

Sorry to hear this. How is he today?
