Insurance recommendations?

We pick our puppy up in a couple of weeks. She is coming with KC insurance until 12th May, but I need to set ours up so there is enough cross over. I’ve read insurances don’t pay out in the first 14days of the policy and while you hope there will be no need to pay out I don’t want to a gap just incase.

Can anyone recommend a pet insurance?

We went with liverpool victoria. Claiming on it now for her paw pad operation. Lady was really nice on the phone and talked me through the process etc. Hopefully my premium doesn't shoot up but that's what we pay for!

Similar situation to you. Going to go with bought by many on local recommendations. If you know someone who has it they can give you a referral code for £20 Amazon voucher. But can also get £60 cash back via Quidco.

RaggieDolls · 29/03/2021 21:42

My vet friend always recommends petplan lifetime cover.

Brewdoggydog · 29/03/2021 21:51

We're with bought by many

Squaddielife · 29/03/2021 23:48

After looking at loads I've just taken our policy with Bought by Many. I can send you a referral link for a £20 amazon voucher if you'd like

StillMedusa · 30/03/2021 00:37

Petplan here. Not cheap but they are excellent to deal with and pay out promptly. Our vets prefer them for that reason!

Derbee · 30/03/2021 01:51

Totally agree with recommendations for PetPlan. Also, lifecover is a must.
Bought By Many doesn’t cover dental, unless you do the most expensive policy

Derbee · 30/03/2021 01:51

PetPlan covers dental

We're with bought by many for our youngest and they do cover dental, we went with one of the cheapest ones.

Would definitely recommend bought by many, or our older boy is insured with Churchill and we've found them great too, just stuck with them for him as we've made claims for ongoing issues so just was easier to stick with them and they were easy to deal with/well priced too

Derbee · 30/03/2021 12:33

@Lou98 Bought by Many doesn’t cover true dental. It is only accidents, not routine dental health such as abscess, impacted teeth etc. Unless you go for the top expensive policy.

All PetPlan policies cover ALL dental which is what swung it for us.

Derbee · 30/03/2021 12:36

Most insurance policies differentiate between dental illness and dental accident. I felt better being with a company who cover both, but it’s personal preference

Wolfiefan · 30/03/2021 12:38

Do check which companies your vet will claim directly from or you could end up out of pocket! Lifetime cover is a must. Plus look at how much they will pay out per condition. It’s not hard to get a bill for thousands

Derbee · 30/03/2021 12:40

Our vet will claim direct from many insurance companies, including PetPlan and Bought BY Many. They won’t deal with Sainsbury’s or Tesco, as they have such trouble getting claims paid by them, so I’d avoid cheap supermarket policies personally

LoveDrunk · 30/03/2021 12:52

We have pet insurance from John Lewis for our dogs. They have paid out the full amount we are covered for on 3 dogs over the last 3 years. We’ve had a very bad few years but they have been so helpful and we’ve had no issues at all with them so I would recommend.

Hightideattheseaside · 30/03/2021 12:53

Thank you for all the suggestions and tips. I’ll phone the vet and have a chat with then and then get looking. Will have to get my small print reading head on!

Anyone have any experience with waffle? Struggling with the 14 day no claim at start with some policies, as can’t start before collect puppy ad they won’t be 8 weeks then. Although I found one ((think pet plan?) who will insure from 6 weeks old-so they would be out of the 14days when collect at8 weeks old if we start it soon enough.

Is your pup KC registered? Should come with 4 weeks free insurance if so. Good breeders usually have some in place to cover the 14 days. Otherwise sometimes the vets do 4 weeks free if you take pup for a health check while you shop around
Wolfiefan · 30/03/2021 13:40

Pup won’t be 8 weeks when you collect it?
Decent breeders should give you insurance to bridge the gap.

plinkplinkfizzer · 31/03/2021 10:21

I would recommend Petplan too simply because the vet claims directly from them . They pay out promptly . The monthly payments do increase as pet gets older . But the fact Vets claim payment from them is one less thing to worry about .

AlmostD · 02/04/2021 00:05

Just realised my typo!! When I asked about waffle, I meant waggel. So try again - anyone with any experience of Waggel? Quotes I’m getting look a lot cheaper than petplan/bought by many for better cover - but wondering if I’m missing something (or rather if the cover is?)

Re 8 weeks - yes, pup will be 8 weeks when we collect. But policy had a 14 day from start you can’t claim in so they wouldn’t be covered until 8 weeks + 14 days. Whereas petplan policy can start at 6 weeks, so by time we collect at 8 weeks the 14 day warm up period would be over.

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2021 22:11

@AlmostD any pup you buy should come with insurance. That means you don’t need to get the insurance before the pet comes home.
If they don’t?
Go elsewhere.

AlmostD · 03/04/2021 12:32

Puppy comes with 4 weeks free puppy insurance, so would be covered by that. However, if it ended up being ill before our main policy kicks in, that would then forever be excluded as pre existing condition.

I’m probably over thinking everything! The chance of puppy bring I’ll within those first couple weeks is probably small anyway.
