I've just worked out
Food: £60
Pet plan: £20
Insurance: £20
Treats/toys £20

I'm actually looking to reduce this if I can. He's currently eating a food called Pure which is good quality but so expensive.

OP posts:

@Lostinthewilderness

A lot of posters seem to be missing costs, like grooming, boarding kennels for holidays (in non Covid times!) I find on these threads people tend to under estimate
We've been really lucky in the 6 years we've had him our family queue up to take him whilst we go away because they all love him 😂
MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 26/03/2021 07:47

We have a very expensive dog!

180 a month drugs (for life) plus extra £80 if he has a fit and loads if he needs hospitalisation (approx £1k for 2 stays so far!!)

£60 food
£96 insurance (just gone up as he’s now over 8 - can’t move due to existing condition)

Plus usual treats/poop bags/vaccinations etc

We’ve had him since a pup and he didn’t get ill until he was 4 - thank god for insurance!!

Other dog not so much - £60-70 on food and insurance

TheRedBalloon · 26/03/2021 07:51

Food £60
Insurance £44
Groomers he goes every 3 weeks £55
Flea /wormer £10
Treats, poop bags, toys £10

Pinchoftums · 26/03/2021 08:01

Food:
Per dog
£20 (we use wagg - our last dog ate little else and loved healthy until she was 18)
£22 Insurance
£20 vets/shots on average over the year
Poo bags £3
That's it. We don't need a walker, we holiday in the main in the UK or Europe so they come with us.
They don't need toys as they find balls and favourite chew toy is the classic old slipper. Mine have never had fleas or worms in over 20 years of dog ownership so never deflea or worm them. No idea why as they are very sociable.

Einsteinsings · 26/03/2021 08:04

Food 30
Insurance 30
Flea/ worm 20
Treats / toys 20
Grooming 20
Dog walker 80
Training 40

So £210

Plus vaccinations, replacement beds, leads etc. We also needed new fencing. So he’s cost a small fortune. Good job we all love him so much! So far not needed doggy day care or holiday cover . But I guess that could add to it

Not everyone goes on holiday without their dogs, or pays for grooming. One of mine goes to the hairdresser and I do the other at home.

I have spent around £200 in the last year on harnesses and leads for mantrailing but that's not a regular monthly expense so wouldn't include it as such.Confused

FrangipaniBlue · 26/03/2021 08:08

Food&Treats £50
Insurance £30
Vet Policy £16
Dog Walker £150

Plus odd toys/extra treats and stuff it probably all comes to £250

Somebody remind me why we're thinking about getting doggo no2...... ?! Grin

LemonRoses · 26/03/2021 08:13

Insurance £28
Petplan £22
Food £52
Shampoos etc £6
Secure dog fields about £150

Then additional but spread out costs such as passport, car adaptations, and dogcare.

Not every dog requires grooming and not everyone needs to use kennels or even goes on holiday!

I have a breed that requires zero grooming apart from the occasional brush when he's casting.

We mostly holiday in UK and take him with us.

On the occasions where we can't take him PIL look after him.

One elderly large dog- just over 250.00 a month. (Sorry my pound sign isn’t working.)

I worked it all out when I was doing a new household budget last month, but can’t access the exact figures at the moment.

That includes food, insurance, arthritis meds (although we do claim them back via his insurance) supplements, non-vet healthcare stuff like toothpaste, mouthwash etc, treats, worming etc, vaccinations and health checks.

We used to have a house/dog-sitter on occasion, so there were some costs involved with that. We take him on holiday to Ireland with us, so there are additional costs involved in relation to his Pet Passport, which is of course no longer valid and I believe it will be more of a regular expense under the new system. He doesn’t go to the groomers.

HildegardeCrowe · 26/03/2021 10:07

What dog do you have OP? Big or small? For my JRT:
£40 food
£30 insurance
€5 puppy pads (old dog who wees in house when I’m out!)
€5 treats, poo bags

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 26/03/2021 12:49

I dread to think... There are three of them.

Food: £100 on kibble plus about £30 on tripe etc
Vet plan for flea and worm treatment etc: £35
Insurance: we have a savings account, and deal with split ears and cut pads ourselves
Other vet bills: have averaged about £20/ month over the years - we'll go ages with nothing and then rack up £500
Kennels: about £50pcm when we include weekends away as well as annual holiday
Training: currently a mint as the puppy gets an hour of 1:1 each week at £45, plus club when it's running at £7 a month, so c£200pcm
Toys, training dummies, replacement kit: £5

So about £450pcm

Plus set up costs for bedding, leads, tags and so on. The grille in the car.

I will NOT be sharing this calculation with DH!

Derbee · 26/03/2021 12:58

One dog.
Insurance £28
Food at least £70
Worming/flea/tick £12
Toys and incidentals at least £20

We also use Pure, but feed a 50:50 mix with kibble, to keep the price down.

Derbee · 26/03/2021 13:00

Forgot poo bags! And the place where we walk a few times a week, is £1.70 to park, so that’s £35 per month!

Strugglingtodomybest · 26/03/2021 13:02

Probably around £30-40 per month roughly.

Ifailed · 26/03/2021 13:11

Why?

noblegreenk · 26/03/2021 13:12

£40 food
£60 insurance
£120 medication (claimed back via insurance)
£15 flea/worm treatment

EggcellentTaste · 26/03/2021 13:23

Per month...

Food & Treats: £100-£125
Walker: £100
Groomer: £45
Insurance: £40
Vet (routine stuff): £20
Ad hoc (leads, toys etc): £25-£50

Sparechange · 26/03/2021 13:34

2 labs

Food: £120ish
Flea and working treatments: £10ish
Coffee from the lovely cafe on the walking route £50

That’s about it really.
We canned the insurance when we got the second one, and put the equivalent of 2 policies worth of premiums into a savings account in case, just haven’t had to spend anything with the vet other than flea, worming and spaying. We get a free annual health check with them and everything is always fine

In normal times, we would spend £50 a day on daycare/boarding when we go on holiday, and £80 for them both to have a bath and de-shed before MIL comes to stay, but neither of those have happened for well over a year..!

Sparechange · 26/03/2021 13:40

When we just had 1 dog, we had a reciprocal agreement with a few sets of friends for dog sitting during holidays. We went 6 years without having to pay a penny for boarding, and had some wonderful dogs come to stay with us as a bonus.

It was only when we got a second dog that we felt it was too much to ask people to take them both for weeks at a time, but we only had one holiday before lockdown.

So in 8 years of dog ownership, our total boarding bill works out at £5/month

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2021 13:48

£65 insurance
£60 medication
£20 needles
£150 food

additional vet checks / grooming / worming etc maybe £25 per month

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2021 13:49

Oh and we holiday where he can come too.

This is true!! ☺️

sunflowersandbuttercups · 26/03/2021 16:59

Probably around £150 a month averaged across the year, including food, treats, chews, poo bags, replacement leads/collars, insurance, injections, the odd vet trip that's not worth claiming for, shampoo etc.
