I've just worked out
Food: £60
Pet plan: £20
Insurance: £20
Treats/toys £20

I'm actually looking to reduce this if I can. He's currently eating a food called Pure which is good quality but so expensive.

OP posts:
almondcroissantandtea · 25/03/2021 21:46

Insurance - £20
Vet plan - £15
Food - £50
Natural treats - £15

Initial layout for beds, crate, collar, lead, bowls, Equafleeces, toys etc - ?£600

FudgeFlake · 25/03/2021 21:53

Waitrose own brand food for both cats and dogs is good quality and a lot cheaper than most of the upmarket stuff.

OP thanks for starting this thread, I've been thinking for some time that most of the focus when talking about the cost of owning a dog has been the huge increase in the initial purchase price since CV kicked off, and the simple fact that on average over the lifetime of a dog it will cost somewhere between £25 and £45 K has been ignored.

Lostinthewilderness · 25/03/2021 22:06

A lot of posters seem to be missing costs, like grooming, boarding kennels for holidays (in non Covid times!)
I find on these threads people tend to under estimate

missbridgerton · 25/03/2021 22:06

I forgot to add that seeing as my 2 live the life of Riley, I also make a regular donation of £20 a month to a spaniel charity so that other doggies get a chance with a new family and a good life.

Kitkat151 · 25/03/2021 22:08

Per month is:
£25 food/treats/poo bags
£8 insurance

Every 3 months:
Grooming £30

Christmas:
£10. New toy

£58 annual vaccinations

He never goes kennels as family look after him if we are away

Lanaa · 25/03/2021 22:09

Standard poodle.

Food £70
Treats £15
Toys £10
Insurance £60
Nexguard £15
Groomer £90
Training £40
No doggy daycare at the minute but will be about £240 when we go back to the office. DH's company are making noises about being dog friendly, so hopefully he can take pampered pooch in to work with him.

doodleygirl · 25/03/2021 22:12

Ins £175
Food and treats £35
Medication for Addisons £28
Arthritis Meds £45

Groom is £40 every 10 weeks or so.

I try not to think about it! Lucky we love her so much

I've never taken my JRT to a groomer, he has a bath at home and is brushed regularly.

I've also never put him in kennels, I know it would be too traumatic, hence why we haven't had a holiday for 5 years! When we do go away he stays with family.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 25/03/2021 22:14

2 small dogs

Per month
About £20-£30 food (buy in bulk wet and dry food)
Dog Walker £130
Insurance £90

Plus
Grooming / nails £35 every 6 weeks
Vaccinations 2 x £70 annually
Worming / flea treatment about £100 over a year

I do always put money aside too for if go on holiday etc, as staying with dog Walker for boarding costs £30 per day

landofgiants · 25/03/2021 22:21

12kg dog

Planet friendly insect protein dog food - approx £30 a month
Poo bags/occ toy/training aid - £10ish a month
Grooming - £25 every 3 months
(I own clippers and sometimes do him myself but these were
£££s as cheaper models sold out during the 1st lockdown)
Butcher's bone - weekly - free, but need to buy meat at the same time
No insurance so occ treatment costs and would expect increased health
costs as dog gets older.
Flea/tick treatment I usually give in warmer months only - approx £65 a
year, however considering doing weekly flea checks instead
Occasional worming tablet. Occasional bigger purchase eg new harness.

Adds up quickly, I had no idea I was spending that much.

Mmmmdanone · 25/03/2021 22:22

Food £30, insurance, £16 (worried that's too cheap now!) Dog walker £80, vet plan £13, groom £25, and lots of other bits and bobs...

landofgiants · 25/03/2021 22:27

Lostinthewilderness - yes, I'm sure I'm underestimating, I'm in denial!

I've never put him in kennels, would take with us or leave with friend/relative instead. I'll add 'thank you gift' to my list.

Cleverpolly3 · 25/03/2021 22:35

Insurance £50
Food £60 (fresh pet packs from the chiller which she loves / James well beloved grain free senior pouches / steamed chicken breast and rice twice a week and freeze dried raw kibble or,sometimes chicken Crave kibble )
No toys
No dog Walker except me😉
Pet plan for her vaccination boosters / flea and worming / dental and three health checks a year £15 a month with the vet
£35 five times a year for grooming / glands/ claws etc

Newpup123 · 25/03/2021 22:39

Eek. Good idea for a thread. Ok here goes...

Food £50
Vet plan for wormer, vaccs etc £16
Insurance £22
Daycare (2days) £40
Toys/chews/poo bags etc say average £10
Groomer £20 a time, every 8 weeks ish so £10

So that's about £150/month. Medium cocker spaniel.

Plus upfront costs of puppy, crate, blankets, leads, collars etc. Will have spay to deal with soon, not sure how much that will be.

Total cock up there - daycare is £40/week so £160/month.

Which takes the total cost to more like £250/month.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2021 22:47

Daycare £750 Shock for 3 days a week
Food/other stuff/vet plan £230

2 dogs - it's MORE than my mortgage HmmShock

slaze · 25/03/2021 22:56

Scary stuff isn't it?!

Good job we love them.

I hope someone considering getting a dog reads this thread first so they can have a true idea of the costs involved before hand.

I'm pretty sure I'm spending more on the dog than my kids!

OP posts:
CarrieMoonbeams · 25/03/2021 23:18

I have 6 dogs, 5 littlies (between 12-16 kilos) and a medium (27 kilos).

Food - £120 (Millies Wolfheart, I buy 6 bags at a time for the discount)
Toys - £20

They don't get other treats, due to one having dodgy skin, so they just get a bit of their kibble. They're not insured because most of them are rescues with pre-existing conditions, but touch wood they're all really healthy now. We're retired so no dog walker / day care needed. I bath and clip them myself.

So apart from food and toys, it's just the usual boosters and the occasional vet trip for any health issues. My vet is great though, gives me a 20% discount on everything. Oh and my friend runs boarding kennels so gives us a really good price too if we go on holiday.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2021 23:19

6 dogs

So envious Envy

Usernameisgone · 25/03/2021 23:33

CarrieMoonbeams · 26/03/2021 00:47

@LaurieFairyCake

6 dogs

So envious Envy

I know, it's absolutely wonderful! Some of them are a bit wonky (one has only 3 legs, one has got big chunks missing from his ears) by my God we just love them all to bits! They give us so much more than we could ever give them.

We also have cats, rabbits and it looks very likely that we'll get 2 cornsnakes that my niece is bored with Angry. (She's 26 BTW, not a child.)

Haven't had snakes before but we'll learn how to look after them, poor wee souls, all are welcome here ❤️

Now just don't ask me to add up how much we spend on them all in total!! Shock

That's true. I'm incredibly lucky and have a queue of people who want to look after my dog for free as I have very dog friendly friends/family but I like to take her on holiday so that adds £25-60 to the price.
NattyDiamondDoll · 26/03/2021 04:10

Two dogs

Food (inc treats) £60
Insurance £53
Pet plan £12.75

Sforsh49 · 26/03/2021 04:22

Treats £5
Insurance £147 (he's old, numerous allergies and arthritic)
Supplement £15 (arthritis)
Vet £15 (averaged over the year, surprisingly hardy little thing)

More than I thought it was, but he's amazing and worth every penny!
