Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

Surely a collie breeder will be best breeding collies, and a poodle breeder would focus on either pure, or labradoodle/cockerpoo crosses that at least are generally a good family crossbred dog?
W
How on earth would anybody land on that breed combo in the real world?!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/03/2021 18:56

Wow that website should be shut down. Despite me making sure my answers would not suit any kind of poodle combo, the match up included three poodle crosses including a Bordoodle (which I’d never even heard of until today).

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/03/2021 18:59

@Spaceman1

I think if I approach dog owners in the park they are more likely to recommend their own dog rather than one that is best for me!
Why would they? I chat to all kinds of people when out with my dog. Like i said i have a hulking great bull breed. But i have experience with lots of other breeds. If you see dogs that you like the look of (both in appearance & your perception of their traits) you could ask the owners about them & like @picklemewalnuts said decide what aspects work for you. And two owners with the same breed can have totally different experiences & advice. If you think everyone is going to try and convince you to get their breed of dog you are mistaken. Its the opposite sometimes. We can highlight their flaws to put off people who havent got the right commitment because it breaks our hearts to think of dogs getting sent to the rescues.
Tal45 · 19/03/2021 18:59

We had a rescue collie cross, she would have 2 hours exercise even at 13 years old. We had a whippet cross as well (also rescue) he was far more lazy and could have coped with just 2 x 30 minute walks. Both would chase a deer/cat/pheasant etc if off lead. Unless you put in lots of training or get a very placid show breed whatever breed you get may well like chasing things. They do generally come back though, just don't let them off lead when you first get them and obviously you would never have them off lead around livestock.

I would really recommend an older rescue dog OP, the temperament will then be known as will whether it can be left for a few hours. Also puppies are a huge amount of work, like really huge. x

What would a Rottie/poodle cross even look like?

The sleek Rottweiler and the poodle? I suppose I could google, but not sure I even want to.

WeeMadArthur · 19/03/2021 19:04

@Spaceman1 try looking on the (British) Kennel Club site, they have good info on breeds on there, or there is a quiz on the American Kennel Club site here that is more realistic.

Covidatemyhomework · 19/03/2021 19:05

A bordoodle? So you mean a cross breed? I do not understand the current vogue of this designer mongrels, sorry.

Onwardsandupwardswego · 19/03/2021 19:08

Have only read as far as the 45 min walk. Bollocks to that. Any collie or collie cross needs loads more. Think 70 miles a week

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/03/2021 19:12

One thing i cannot bear is owners of working dogs not "working" them.
They go round the bend without the exercise & stimulation.
Collies, huskys, etc etc people buying them for their appearance not realising how much work they need and then getting pissed off with the dog when there are behavioural issues as a result.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 19/03/2021 19:15

Fuck me. Got to the end of page 1... OP, a water retriever crossed with a herder. What could possibly go wrong?!*

*LOTS

fallfallfall · 19/03/2021 19:20

@Heyha, maybe the entire site is set up by an unscrupulous poodle owner willing to mate her female with anything that walks by.
Trying to envision a poodle basset cross....

Hmm
You do realise that even with two outstanding working parents it is not uncommon to get puppies in a litter that don’t have enough drive/have too much drive/are in some other way unsuitable for working..?

Spaceman1 · 19/03/2021 19:24

@WeeMadArthur Thank you, I'll have a look.

OP posts:
blowinahoolie · 19/03/2021 19:28

Puppies take up a lot of your time, regardless of breed. You would need to be free to toilet train a puppy, expecting it to entertain itself for three hours whilst you work isn't realistic.

I agree with another poster in that an elderly dog might be better suited to you. A failed guide dog or something along those lines.

I think you misunderstood me which is why i put "working" in quotes. I didnt mean literally working. I meant providing sufficient exercise and stimulation suitable to the breed.

😂😂😂😂 "hmmm, I could make loads of money selling a popular and reasonably well-proven cross...or....🤔"

8dpwoah · 19/03/2021 19:35

I agree with all the other PPs. There will be a dog out there for you OP and it's great you're doing your research. I have met some really nice smaller poodles that have been good family animals.

I have a strange mental image of a shed full of a line of female dogs of all different breeds, then someone brings in a male poodle.

Like some sort of really weird porn scene 🤮

Google tells me it's a Bassetoodle. Apparently they are "not overly energetic". I suspect google lies on that one.

www.101dogbreeds.com/bassetoodle.asp

Motorina · 19/03/2021 19:43

(And the pictures on that site pretty much prove why a cross-breed isn't a breed. Lots of bassetoodles, all of them totally different. Bonkers!)

@bluebluezoo that is the most weirdly off-putting and funny post I've read all day. Well done. I think.

wetotter · 19/03/2021 19:47

If you want an unusual breed, try a vulnerable native:

www.thekennelclub.org.uk/getting-a-dog/are-you-ready/vulnerable-native-breeds/

The terriers on that list would probably suit you - they can be strong-willed (obstinate as sin), so work with a good trainer in the early days

Or Norfolk Terrier - friendly enthusiastic family dogs, but would be OK on 40mins twice a day. Or swop borders, and go for a Border Terrier (not collie)

I'm starting to think you might be onto something!!

wetotter · 19/03/2021 20:01

I just did the quiz, and got the dratted bordoodle

The other results were more interesting though: Sealyham terrier,
(a vulnerable native) Italian greyhound (worth looking and both those two, OP) also need poochon and bergamasco sheepdog

Tut tut, do pay attention @ChardonnaysPetDragon, Wink I said BOXweiler. A highly sought after designer breed that will rip a burglar's throat out and then decide it wants to be his best friend. This is the best dog for me because, if a friend is telling a story I have heard before, I will just smile and nod (one of the survey questions...) and I'm a carousel rather than a roller coaster (also survey question).
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/03/2021 20:08

I got goldendoodle, sheepadoodle, labradoodle and Saint Berdoodle.

It's a bit doodlelally.
