Dog castrated today but no buster collar

What else can I use?

The vets were supposed to send home a buster collar but no collar came home (DP collected him and I didn't tell him he was supposed to come home with one), by the time he was home the vets were closed. Is there anything I can use overnight to stop him licking at his wound? To add insult to his injury, poor lad, they managed to nick his penis and cut the artery which bled, a lot, so I really would like to protect the area if I can.

Oooooo ouch. Poor sod

If he’s a small dog, one of your t-shirts/child’s t-shirt/baby grow might do?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 17/03/2021 18:25

Have you got a disposable nappy to hand, or can you get one tonight? I’ve used that before to cover a wound on my dogs hind quarter, had to cut a hole for the tail but worked quite well.

Lellochip · 17/03/2021 18:26

Some men's/boys pants, backwards with his tail out the fly?

bloodywhitecat · 17/03/2021 18:28

Brilliant ideas! He's a Springer spaniel, Kerry Blue terrier cross so he's not small but I do have disposables in a range of sizes as I foster babies and children.

Can you put a call out on facebook to see if anyone local has one or a doggy babygro.

mumto2teenagers · 17/03/2021 18:31

Pets at home sell them if you have one near you, the one near us closes at 8pm.

Pandoraslastchance · 17/03/2021 18:35

Pool noodle around neck?

We had to use a babyvest when our lad was snipped.

seepingweeping · 17/03/2021 18:37

Put a pair of pants over his bits so he can't get at them.

That's what I did for my dogs when they got ✂️

sunflowersandbuttercups · 17/03/2021 18:43

We never used one and ours was fine.

You could put a babygrow on him if you have one?

bloodywhitecat · 17/03/2021 18:48

Our nearest Pets at Home is over an hour away (the joys of rural living), I have ordered him a collar from Amazon and tonight we will try a pair of pants and, if they don't work, I will raid the nappy cupboard to see what we have. He is already licking at his penis because I think it is stinging where they nicked him, he's quite subdued tonight but by morning I think the Springer in him will be springing again.

I used an oversized tshirt. Whenever he sat down to lick it, the tshirt got in the way.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/03/2021 21:02

One of my parents' dogs managed to remove all his stitches by nibbling them, so I wouldn't risk not covering them

Sitdowncupoftea · 18/03/2021 18:09

Can you not phone a vets up to buy one. I did see someone make one before from a swimming noodle.

wandawombat · 18/03/2021 18:13

I wouldn't use a disposable one, as he might chew the hydrogens in the nappy. Definitely cover, even if you watch, nibbling is done sneakily. 😁

bloodywhitecat · 18/03/2021 19:56

The one I ordered from Amazon arrived today, I was stuck for a car today as DP needed it to attend his chemo (which is in the opposite direction to the vets). I spoke to the practice and they were most apologetic.

I bought a body suit from the vets when my dogs were done it's great you just open the poppers roll the bottom half up when they need to toilet . I use it now when the weathers cold as it's lovely and soft and warm.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/03/2021 20:37

@Alexis21 that sounds as if you wear it!

muddyford · 21/03/2021 18:21

My springer spaniel managed to get past the body suit and infected his wound. No substitute for a Buster collar!
